Fig Katazome Ramie Noren Curtain – Handmade Japanese Doorway Curtain

A handmade two-panel Noren featuring a simple fig motif on Handwoven Natural Ramie No.75 Xia Bu.

The fig design is created through a traditional katazome paste-resist process. Before dyeing, the motif is protected with resist paste, allowing the natural tone and texture of the ramie to remain visible while the surrounding cloth takes on its botanical color.

No.75 ramie has a naturally structured body with visible handwoven character. The fabric feels dry, crisp, and lightly rustic rather than soft or fluid. Its open weave is breathable, semi-sheer, and light-filtering, allowing daylight and airflow to pass through while providing gentle visual privacy between spaces.

Ramie is known for its long natural bast fibers, which give the cloth strength and a distinctive crispness. Rather than hanging like conventional soft drapery, the Noren holds a quiet architectural form — almost like a soft architectural element within the room.

It creates separation without completely enclosing a space, making it especially suitable as a lightweight soft room divider.

Botanical Color Options

Deep Indigo — Gallnut
A deep indigo-charcoal tone with smoky blue, softened black, and dark mineral undertones. In shaded interiors it may appear almost black, while backlighting reveals more blue-gray variation through the weave.

Muted Purple — Sappanwood
A restrained plum-purple with smoky mauve, muted rose, and warm mineral undertones. Atmospheric rather than strongly violet.

Mineral Green — Pagoda Flower
A softened botanical green with olive, moss, and warm yellow-green undertones. Daylight brings out its more vegetal character, while lower light gives it a deeper, earthier appearance.

Hinoki Brown — Blood Vine
A warm, earthy brown with subtle reddish and aged-wood undertones. The botanical variation gives the color a quiet, naturally layered quality.

Clay Brown — Dyeing Yam
A rich botanical brown developed through repeated dye baths, with warm clay, earth, and subtle reddish undertones.

Earth Brown — 5-Year-Aged Persimmon Tannin, Triple Dyed · Limited Edition
A warm earth-brown created with carefully aged persimmon tannin.

Freshly dyed pieces may initially appear lighter than the deeper brown shown in some photographs. With exposure to air and light, persimmon tannin naturally oxidizes and gradually develops a richer, deeper tone.

Because this is a natural dyeing process, the starting shade and rate of color development may vary slightly from piece to piece.

Persimmon tannin also gives the ramie a somewhat firmer, more substantial hand. This option may be used in protected semi-outdoor areas, although prolonged exposure to rain, moisture, and harsh weather should still be avoided.

Availability is limited by the supply of properly aged persimmon tannin.

Installation

Inset Mount
Install inside the doorway using a tension rod for a clean, minimal, no-drill setup.

Outside-Frame Mount
Install a bamboo, wood, or metal rod above or outside the opening for wider coverage and a stronger architectural presence.

The Noren is finished with a flat straight rod pocket.

Botanical Color & Light

Each Noren is individually colored with plant-derived dyes rather than cut from one large, uniformly dyed fabric batch.

We carefully control the production process, but botanical color naturally responds to factors such as plant material, season, temperature, humidity, fiber absorption, and individual dye batches. Subtle differences in color depth and undertone may therefore occur between individual pieces or production batches.

Ramie is also naturally light-filtering. The same Noren may appear lighter, deeper, warmer, cooler, or more translucent depending on daylight, indoor lighting, backlighting, viewing angle, and the surrounding room.

A front-lit view and a backlit view of the same textile may therefore appear noticeably different.

Care

Professional dry clean only.

Do not machine wash, hand wash, soak, tumble dry, scrub, or wring the fabric.

Avoid bleach, chemical detergents, alcohol, disinfecting sprays, and harsh fabric treatments.

Gently remove surface dust when needed.

If ironing is necessary, use a low temperature.

Keep away from open flame, excessive heat, prolonged moisture, and harsh outdoor exposure.

Handmade Character

Each piece is individually woven, dyed, cut, sewn, and paste-resist finished by hand.

Natural variations may appear in botanical color, weave density, visible slubs, fiber thickness, motif edges, natural fabric edges, panel alignment, and finished dimensions within the stated tolerance.

Slight waviness, irregular threads, and subtle differences in dye movement or weave are part of the natural character of traditional handwoven ramie.
