Description

11x17" original photographic print of the memorial of Father William Corby in the Gettysburg National Military Park. The photo is paired with the W.E.B. Du Bois quote: "It is, then, the strife of all honorable men of the *twentieth century to see that in the future competition of races the survival of the fittest shall mean the triumph of the good, the beautiful and the true; that we may be able to preserve for future civilizations all that is really fine and noble and strong, and not to continue to put a premium on greed and impudence and cruelty."

I was working in Westminster at the time and I had a meeting in Pennsylvania. I can often jump in over my head, and this particular meeting left me with an overwhelmingly unpleasant impression with a little cruelty thrown in, whether real or imagined. And the fact that I am particularly emotional in general left me with a strong desire to take a little time to pull myself together. I had never been to Gettysburg and seeing the signs it was the perfect distraction, so I turned off my cell phone and headed to Gettysburg. Weather was spectacular and once I started to drive through the park I began to take some pictures with my phone. This monument, the inscription and the information I later learned about that battle and Father Corby on Wikipedia and other sources made it feel like a divine moment. And for many months when I would face difficulty I would pull up the image and it always brought a sense of strength to me. If you do any research on the monument you may understand more fully and it may become personal for you as it has for me.

Because I feel so strongly about the quote, W.E.B. Du Bois, Father Corby and the photograph I left the text clearly legible. Currently I see greed, poverty and cruelty to have eroded our country and I like to be reminded of alternatives by our famous scholars and theologians. It is every bit as relevant today as it was in the 1900s. W.E.B. Du Bois was a black scholar, born in 1868 and is famous as a historian, sociologist and civil rights activist. You can find more about him on Wikipedia.

• Lovely image of historic Gettysburg monument
• Great for history buffs, Civil War students
• Empowering quote that pairs two American heroes
• Reminder of loss of life for freedom and virtue
• Only commemorated non-military individual at Gettysburg

The print is designed to fit in ready-made 16"x20" frame. Thank you for visiting my shop. The prints are sent rolled in a cardboard sleeve. I haven't begun to sell them framed, but that is coming.
