Description

A very sort after and collectable deck.

Grand Jeu De Mlle LENORMAND

B.P.Grimaud

Made In France

54 Cards with a booklet of 216 pages

Cartomancie Ref.G 105

The cards are in lovely condition but do smell slightly musty due to age, the box has some wear.

This is a large deck with cards measuring 5" tall by 3.5" wide.

Mlle. Lenormand was born in 1772 (or maybe 1768...) and died on June 25, 1843. She started out doing card readings with a 32 card piquet deck. She was the most celebrated fortune teller of all time and made many bold and accurate predictions about the most famous and powerful personages in France. Napoleon had her thrown in prison once, I suppose he didn't like what he heard.

Her first book, a tell-all memoir, was Les Souvenirs Prophétiques d'une Sibylle, published in 1814. It was followed by a series of similar books combining court gossip, prophecies of the future, stories detailing the brilliance of her own predictions and the stupidity of the police who harassed her. By the time of her 1817 Les Oracles Sibyllins, she had added Tarot (probably Etteilla) to her repertoire.

After her death, it seems every fortune teller in the world tried to claim that they were privy to her method. Most 19th century fortune telling methods were falsely attributed to either Mlle. Lenormand, or Gypsies, or both. In the late 19th century a number of pulp dream and cartomancy books appeared, allegedly penned by a Camille Le Normand claiming to be Mlle.'s niece and the heir of her methods.
