Description

“Silence, maiden; thy tongue outruns thy discretion.”

An attractive volume of Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe from 1933, published by The Daily Express Publications, London.

Ivanhoe is a historical novel first published in 1820. Set in 12th century England it has been credited for increasing interest in romance and medievalism. The story is set in 1194, after the failure of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to their homes in Europe. King Richard, who had been captured by Leopold of Austria on his return journey to England, was believed to be still in captivity.

The legendary Robin Hood, initially under the name of Locksley, is also a character in the story, as are his "merry men". The character that Scott gave to Robin Hood in Ivanhoe helped shape the modern notion of this figure as a cheery noble outlaw.

The pages have mild foxing to the closed page edges, but are remarkably good for a book of 83 years old! There is no writing, marks or inscriptions. The top of the closed page edges are tinted dark pink/red to match the boards. The frontispiece portrait is of Sir Walter Scott, and there are nine further illustrations including two by George Cruikshank (see photos). The volume also includes a foreword "Sir Walter Scott-The Man and his Book" by Wilfred Partington, and a number of Author's Notes at the rear.

Has red cloth covered boards and spine with beautiful gilt lettering. There is a blind stamped winged horse motif on the front and an olive branch motif on the spine. The front board and rear board are in good condition apart from a number of areas where the red has rubbed off leaving pink marks (see photos 1 and 2). The spine has faded in comparison to the bright red of the boards but is otherwise excellent with bright gilt lettering.

Despite some vintage wear to the boards this is a bright, tight, clean copy. Far superior to a modern mass market edition, Ivanhoe will arrive wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon.

H 19cm X W 13cm, 511 pages. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. Further shipping information can be found in the shop policies section if required.
