This rustic looking butterfly pendant was made using an ancient eggshell mosaic technique.
I started with a solid metal butterfly and then broken egg shells were added and stained with greens, blacks and oranges to look like an old rusted piece. A triple thick clear finish was added for strength, durability and shine.
Very unique and each one is original so you will receive this exact necklace.

Eggshell mosaics were popular in Renaissance (and slightly earlier) Italy. The artist/biographer Giorgio Vasari mentions eggshell mosaic (musaico di gusci d' uovo) in his Lives of the Artists (Architecture) in 1551. He specifically associates the technique with Gaddo Gaddi, a Florentine painter and mosaicist who lived from 1239-1312 or thereabouts.

Hangs 18" on a black metal neck chain. Please leave me a note to seller if you'd like the neck chain shorter or longer!

Please Convo me with any questions or special orders.
