Description

BLUEGRASS

{ The Prairie Meadow }

Roll carefree in a clover filled prairie, unburdened with tumbleweed and wildflowers in your hair. Leap over freshly baled hay and get lost in the shapes of clouds. Loose track of time on the longest summer afternoon as you link stems of daisies into a garland. Distant fiddles sing hymns of the old south and the sunrays coax the soft incense from the sweetgrass braids.

Style: Fougere, green, grass, agrestic

Prominent Notes:
Hay
Clover
Sweetgrass
Bluegrass
Lavender
Violet Leaf

The Personal, The Process, The Gathered

- The Full Buck Moon – July
July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month’s Moon is the Full Hay Moon and the Meadow Moon, fitting for this fragrance.

In response to Bluegrass perfume:

"You somehow managed to wrap up a meadow into a single bottle of bliss! Ananda, you have no idea how Bluegrass enfolds me in the fields I love more than anything on this Earth....my soul is humming like crickets and my heart is filled up with fire flies. If heaven for me could be described, it would be your Bluegrass, nothing more. Its many layers of windblown grasses, blooms, and sunlit earth cannot be any less than where the Gods tread."

~Marlaina Donato, Artist.
~~

The quintessential smell of a summer field. Of fecund meadows rolling in golden wheat and fluttering oats. Of tall, gentle stands of white and pink clover. Steady and soft, green and inviting, a daydream resting on a breeze. Growing up in Iowa this is how I spent my summers and is the nostalgic smell of my wonder years spent in braids and handmade prairie dresses despite my rough and tumble ways.

Bluegrass is also an homage to down home comfort music; the fiddle and the banjo, and perfectly aligned voices like Leah and Chloe of Rising Appalachia. Bluegrass invokes front porch feelings and a sense of home. It opens smoothly with green grassy notes and a waxy bluegrass warmth. Lavender draws you in to the reverent sweetgrass notes in the heart of the perfume. Beeswax, Hay, and Clover hold long on the skin and are simply divine throughout the wear. Very subtle veils of sandalwood, tobacco, violet leaf and vetiver give structure and complexity.

This perfume smells deeply natural to me - the way my skin carries home the smell of the plants after a day of wildcrafting elder flowers and skullcap in the tallest grass on the horse farm. The way I feel loosing myself to a nap in the summer lawn when the grass has just been cut. It smells natural on the skin and is easily a beautiful androgynous scent.
The plants I gathered for this perfume are white clover (melilotus alba) which extracts into the most beautiful, fragrant clover-hay aroma that carries this perfume and keeps you close to the land.

FAQs

The ancient art of botanical perfumery carries the alchemy of scent and of plant magic into today’s world of busy-ness and disconnection. With roots deep in the realm of spirituality and  ritual, of sacred rites and daily healing, of seduction and sensuality, botanical aromatics stir a primal part of ourselves. Scent awakens our instincts, strengthens our spirits, confirms our identity, and opens our imagination.

With today’s capacities for obtaining natural aromatics, we as botanical perfumers now have access to a vast palette of scent profiles, offering the artist, and the market, an incredible array of sophisticated and elegant possibilities.
While aromatherapy blends offer (usually much simpler) therapeutic combinations of essential oils to aid in health and well being, botanical perfume expands beyond this purpose utilizing a much larger range of aromatic materials and composing accords using both traditional and modern methods of blending that utilize alchemy, synergy, sensory intuition and focus, artistic vision, and skill. Perfume for the sake of pleasure, fashion, and experience, versus aromatherapy for the purpose of health benefits.
Although natural perfumes will naturally have aromatherapeutic properties, this is a small part of how and why they are created. Perfumes really are created fully for the smell experience.
I pride myself on creating perfumes with tenacity in mind. I like a perfume that evolves and wears for at least a good few hours or more. Most of my perfumes are made at a strong percentage and with base notes that act as fixatives. That said, in general, botanical fragrances are personal and intimate; they are not meant to enter the room before you; they are meant to walk with you, as your second skin, as your je ne sais quoi. Natural perfumes will vary widely in their wearing time and sillage, depending on the ingredients and the concentration of the perfume, how much you apply, and your personal chemistry - but in general will not have the overwhelm or “stick” that synthetics do. For today's conscious market, this is highly desirable.
CHYPRE; a classic fragrance based on the synergy of oakmoss, patchouli, labdanum, and bergamot. Usually very dramatic and often with a powdery, mossy, feminine undertone. Chypres commonly feature rich floral hearts and varied top notes.
FLORAL: Jasmine, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Neroli. Floral centered compositions.
FOUGERE; An alchemical blend based on the synergy of oakmoss, lavender, and coumarin (ei; hay, clover). Often a masculine or unisex result. Frequently features green variations (see below)
GOURMAND; Foodie, edible, ei; chocolate, honey, spices, coffee, tea, fruits
GREEN: Grassy green, Coniferous green, Citrus peel green, or Herbal green.
ORIENTAL; Amber base, exotic spices, floral and/or citrus top notes. Dramatic and sensual.
I use beeswax in my lip balms and in a few of my perfumes, so you may not consider that vegan.
All of my perfumes are plant based, cruelty-free, 100% natural, sythentic free, petroleum free, phthalate free, and as consciously sourced as possible.
All of my base extracts are from wild harvested plants that I gather myself, and from artisanal tinctures that I make by hand.
I offer a small line of my perfumes for select stockists. They are available here through Etsy Wholesale, or directly via invoice.

My perfumes do best in high end boutique style shops or floral design venues where the customer appreciates natural products and fine art.
