The people of Turkey love nothing more than to "tell" their stories to any who will listen, for long as they will listen. Now Charles Downing has effectively and faithfully translated a part of the cycle of these beloved stories concerning that historical an celebrated personality, Nasreddin Hodja.
The honorary title of hodja - denoting a scholar learned in the Qoran and religious law, allows Nasreddin to don many cloaks within his own society. He is found at one moment in the role of preacher, of khatib, in the mosque. Next he becomes the cadi, or magistrate, deciding a ridiculous but urgent argument. Suddenly it is the Hodja himself who is being bested by an innocent passer-by, or perhaps - even his mule. In every case the Hodja remains a hero - sometimes wise, sometimes foolish, often exasperating but always triumphantly in character. William Papas' full-color illustrations brilliantly evoke the always shifting role of the Hodja.
Tales of the Hodja demonstrates well the magnificent heritage of folk-lore that the many-faceted culture of the Middle East has produced.
This is a former library book so it still has things on it that a library book would have.
The book does lay pretty flat when open. Looks like someone squished the pages down so they'd stay open to that page.
Pages are still tight.
Covers and edges show signs of wear.
The dust jacket still has the plastic on it from the library. Both show signs of wear.
