10+ Sweet Orange Seeds, Citrus sinensis, Citrus Tree

Sweet Orange Seeds — Citrus × aurantium

This packet contains 10 sweet orange seeds. Sweet orange is widely known by the synonym Citrus × sinensis; current Kew taxonomy places it under Citrus × aurantium f. aurantium. It is an evergreen subtropical citrus tree. These are seeds, not a grafted tree, and seedlings can vary from their parent and may remain juvenile for years, so they should not be treated as guaranteed copies of a named fruit cultivar.

Sowing

Use clean pots with drainage holes and a sterile, free-draining seed-starting medium. Sow each seed about 6–12 mm deep, cover lightly, and water gently. Keep the medium warm and evenly moist but never saturated. Provide bright light as seedlings emerge, with protection from harsh midday sun until the first leaves have hardened. Germination timing varies with temperature, moisture and the condition of each seed.

Growing on

Pot seedlings individually once roots and several leaves have developed. Increase light gradually and use a citrus-suitable, well-drained growing medium. Sweet orange prefers full sun when established but is frost tender. In cool climates, grow it in a container that can be moved into a bright, protected place before cold weather. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain; do not leave the pot standing in water.

Long-term expectations

Seed-grown citrus is valuable for botanical growing and observation, but flowering and fruiting are not assured. Store unsown seeds sealed, labelled, cool and dry until use, avoiding heat and repeated moisture changes.
