WHAT THE FILE FINDS — from the sample family that ships inside (the Nolans are sample data, not customers)
· 54 months of runway, to the month. $209,700 of liquid assets against $2,820 of monthly income, $4,550 of care and $2,150.90 of other costs — a $3,880.90 monthly gap, so the money runs out in February 2031.
· The famous in-home figure is 44 hours a week. The published $80,080 a year assumes part-time help. Round-the-clock care at home is $305,760 — 2.36 times a $129,575 private nursing home room — and the crossover to assisted living arrives at 40.9 hours a week. This is the most useful number in the file and almost nobody prices it.
· The sibling doing the driving is $25,133 ahead of her fair share. 437.5 hours logged, 317.5 of them unpaid family hours worth $6,480.46, 60.2% of them carried by one person. Settle-up: $16,677, from one named sibling to another, with the arithmetic on screen.
· Medicare covers an average of 29 days of skilled nursing per admission, not 100 — and all 80 chargeable days would bill $17,360. The What Medicare Covers tab is verbatim from Medicare.gov, including the line that says you pay all costs of long-term care.
· $212,000 over the asset limit, 54.6 months of spend-down, and $34,400 of transfers already inside the look-back window carrying a 3.59-month penalty worth $24,056.23. Every state-variable number is a cream cell, because there is no federal penalty divisor.

Medicaid and elder law are intensely state-specific: the asset limit, the penalty divisor, the look-back rules and the estate recovery process all change at the state line, and California alone runs on different numbers and a different look-back than the other 49. Every state-variable figure in this workbook is a blank cream cell with a note telling you to get the real number from your own state's Medicaid agency, not a national figure dressed up as yours. Talk to a certified elder law attorney before you transfer, gift or retitle any asset — an uncompensated transfer inside the look-back can create a penalty period that starts when your parent is otherwise eligible, which is exactly when the money is already gone. Confirm coverage questions at Medicare.gov and benefit questions at VA.gov before you rely on any figure here.
