🎨🧊 Paint the electric-blue heart of a 12-kilometre glacier — Franz Josef ice cave with god-rays streaming in
The extraordinary massive brilliant electric cobalt-blue and warm silver-white glacial ice cave interior with distinctive rippling wave-like frozen ice walls and elegant arched ice ceiling illuminated by dramatic warm gold golden-hour sunlight streaming dramatically through the ice cave entrance opening against a burning amber sky glimpsed through the opening. Brilliant electric cobalt-blue and warm silver-white ancient glacial ice walls catching brilliant coral and gold golden-hour sunlight in exquisite detail with beautiful visible ice texture and internal glacial bubbles. Dramatic warm gold shafts of sunlight penetrating dramatically through the ice cave opening in spectacular vertical light rays illuminating the interior in warm gold. Warm cream and warm silver ice ceiling with rippling frozen wave patterns catching warm amber illumination. Warm silver-blue ice floor catching brilliant warm gold reflections. Brilliant cobalt-blue and warm silver ice crystals frozen into the walls catching warm gold highlights. Warm silver-white ice stalactites hanging from the ceiling catching golden light. Warm silhouette of a Franz Josef Glacier guide in warm crimson jacket and warm silver ice crampons standing inside the cave for scale catching warm gold illumination. Warm silhouette of a small group of visitors in warm coral and cream ice-climbing gear with warm gold headlamps exploring the cave. Warm cream breath vapour visible from the visitors in the freezing air. Warm silver-blue glacial meltwater stream flowing across the cave floor catching warm gold reflections. Distant view through the cave opening showing warm coral snow-capped Southern Alps peaks catching brilliant sunset alpenglow. Franz Josef ice cave is New Zealand itself — the electric-blue heart of the Southern Alps, and the sacred tears of an ancient Māori legend. And it is your painting.
Step through the cave entrance at 6 pm. Watch the light turn the ice electric-blue. Let the brush find the cobalt. Paint it on your iPad or print it and paint on canvas — both are included.

✨ A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Franz Josef Glacier — traditionally known in Māori as "Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere," literally "the Tears of Hine Hukatere" — flows dramatically down the western flank of the Southern Alps on New Zealand's West Coast, approximately 350 kilometres northwest of Christchurch and 400 kilometres northwest of Queenstown. The glacier is one of the most extraordinary geological features anywhere in New Zealand, and one of only a handful of glaciers anywhere on Earth that flows directly from high-altitude alpine terrain down through low-elevation subtropical temperate rainforest to end within just a few kilometres of the Tasman Sea coastline. Franz Josef Glacier is 12 kilometres long, descends from an elevation of 3,000 metres at its head high on the Southern Alps down to just 240 metres above sea level at its terminus in the West Coast rainforest valley below, and moves at an extraordinary rate of approximately 1-4 metres per day — making it one of the fastest-moving glaciers anywhere in the entire temperate world. Its Māori name — Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere — reflects a beautiful traditional Ngāi Tahu Māori legend. According to Ngāi Tahu oral tradition, a young Māori woman named Hine Hukatere loved the mountains dearly and would often persuade her lover Wawe to climb into the high Southern Alps with her. During one of these mountain expeditions, an avalanche struck and Wawe was killed, falling to his death. Hine Hukatere, overcome with grief and inconsolable sorrow, wept continuously in the high mountains. Her tears froze into the glacier that still bears her name today — the Tears of Hine Hukatere. The glacier's contemporary English name was given in 1865 by the Austrian-born geologist Julius von Haast, who was serving as chief geologist to the Canterbury Provincial Council of the New Zealand colonial government. Von Haast named the glacier in honour of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria — the reigning emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who ruled from 1848 to 1916. Von Haast's naming choice reflected his own Austrian heritage and colonial-era diplomatic conventions of the mid-19th century. Franz Josef Glacier's most extraordinary feature — and one of the most spectacular photographic subjects anywhere in New Zealand — is the extraordinary electric cobalt-blue and warm silver-white colour of its interior glacial ice caves. The distinctive electric-blue colour of ancient glacial ice is caused by the extraordinary compression and slow crystallisation of ancient snow into dense glacial ice over hundreds to thousands of years. When light penetrates deep into ancient dense glacial ice, only blue light frequencies successfully travel through the ice structure — all other light frequencies are scattered and absorbed by the ice crystal structure. This produces the distinctive brilliant electric cobalt-blue colour that gives ancient glacial ice its extraordinary appearance. The ice caves of Franz Josef Glacier form and change constantly as the glacier moves and the meltwater rivers running through and beneath the glacier reshape the interior structure. Glacier guide companies operate carefully monitored guided walks and helicopter tours into and onto the glacier from Franz Josef Village at the glacier's base — providing visitors with the extraordinary opportunity to walk directly inside massive electric-blue ice caves illuminated by warm gold sunlight streaming through the ice cave openings. Franz Josef Glacier is protected within the massive Westland Tai Poutini National Park, which was inscribed alongside three other South Island national parks as the Te Wāhipounamu — South West New Zealand World Heritage Site in 1990. The World Heritage Area encompasses over 26,000 square kilometres of protected wilderness — approximately 10 percent of the entire New Zealand land area. Modern climate change has caused significant glacier retreat at Franz Josef over the past 40 years — the glacier terminus has retreated approximately 2 kilometres since the mid-1980s. Continuing scientific monitoring documents ongoing gradual retreat, though the extraordinary geographic combination of the glacier's high-altitude catchment above 3,000 metres elevation combined with the West Coast's extraordinarily high annual rainfall (over 5,000 millimetres per year at Franz Josef Village) continues to maintain glacier flow well below climate models' initial expectations. Standing quietly inside an electric-blue glacial ice cave at 6:30 PM on a warm April evening, watching brilliant warm gold sunset god-rays penetrate through the cave opening to illuminate the extraordinary cobalt-blue ancient ice walls around you while distant warm coral Southern Alps peaks catch alpenglow through the cave's ice-framed entrance, is one of the most spiritually powerful and quietly transcendent glacial landscape experiences anywhere on Earth.
