West African Barbershop or Hair Salon Signs
These signs are painted by either hairstylists or paid artists working as sign painters. This one is not signed by 'Kofi Art', but because of the style, we are attributing it to this art studio. They depict elaborate styles of hair braiding for women or contemporary styles of hair cuts for men. These signs are painted using bright house or commercial paints on plywood boards, masonite or recycled wood. They are set out next to or around the stylists to give examples of the kind of work they can do and to attract customers. Some of these painted hair signs have product placements of items either used or available for the customers.
These signs can be found in many West African countries, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin, Togo and Nigeria to list a few, they have also been found in different Caribbean countries.
These smaller signs from Togo measure approx. 12" x 15" and have recycled wood brace bars on the back that were put on by us at the shop for easy display. Beautiful example of African Folkart painting.
