On April 10, 1925, Charles Scribner's Sons printed 20,870 copies of a novel at $2.00, in a jacket by Francis Cugat.

Somewhere in that run a compositor set "chatter" where the corrected text reads "echolalia." Somebody caught it. By August it was fixed. Those uncorrected readings — six in the text, one more on the jacket — are now how a collector tells the earliest sheets from the rest.

Seven small errors, worth a great deal of money. The lower-case j is the famous one, and it is a point on the jacket rather than in the text — on most first-state jackets it was corrected by hand in ink.

Underneath them the census runs on. Second printing, August 1925 — 3,000 copies, every text point corrected. Chatto & Windus in London, 1926. Modern Library, 1934, carrying the only introduction Fitzgerald ever wrote to one of his own novels, discontinued for lack of sales.

He died in December 1940 believing the book a failure, with no American printing since 1934 and copies of the second printing still unsold in Scribner's warehouse. That August his royalty statement had recorded forty copies of all his books — seven of them this one — and paid him $13.13.

In 1945 the Armed Services Editions printed 155,000 copies and gave them away to serving soldiers, nearly eight times the first printing, and that is the printing that brought it back. Every edition on this sheet below that line was posthumous.

In 2021 the copyright expired and anyone could print it.
