Most alphabet packs assume you already know how the letters sound. This one does not.

Every letter has its Spanish name written out — "hache", "jota", "uve doble" — and a sound note in ordinary English. H is silent, every time. J is a strong h from the back of the throat. B and V are the same sound, not similar, the same. C and G change before e and i.

There is a two-page table you can keep next to you while you work, and six spelling rules written out in full.

THE HONEST PART MOST PACKS SKIP

No Spanish word begins with ñ. So the ñ page uses "piña" and marks the letter in the middle of the word, where it actually lives. Pretending otherwise would teach a child something untrue on day one.

Same for k, w and x — they are in the Spanish alphabet but barely in Spanish words, and the guide says so instead of dressing it up.

And ch, ll and rr stopped being letters in 2010, which is why there are 27 here and not 29. Your child's grandmother may well say otherwise. Both of them are right about their own alphabet, and that is a lovely thing to explain rather than correct.

WHICH SPANISH IS THIS?

Standard, and understood everywhere Spanish is spoken. Nothing here is regional slang.

Where families differ, yours wins: if you say "carro" rather than "coche", or "banana" rather than "plátano", cross it out and write yours. Yours is the one your child will actually use.

The one real difference is z and soft c — "th" in most of Spain, "s" almost everywhere else. Both are correct. The guide says which is which and leaves the choice to your family.

- There is no audio. The pronunciation help is written, and a real voice will always beat it. Pair it with whoever in your family speaks Spanish, or any free recording of the alphabet.
- It is not a curriculum. It does not teach grammar, gendered nouns, verbs or reading sentences.
- The PDFs are fixed, not editable.
- It is printable files, not an app, a subscription or a printed book.
- Paper will not teach a child a language. Talking to them will. This is for the part of the week when you want something in front of you both.
