This is the office holiday party version. Eight coworkers, a blind gift exchange where nine names are drawn in secret with no tags and no cards, and this year the gifts are not funny. Every one of them lands squarely on something the person receiving it would rather nobody knew. At 9:12 in the evening somebody shouts down the back stairwell and the Director of Operations is found in the fourth floor storage loft. One of the eight did it.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE TABLE

Every guest is handed a character booklet, and every word they will ever say is already printed inside it. No acting, no memorizing, no improvising. Three rounds, each built the same way. You read a round card aloud, each player reads their statement for that round straight off the page, then you open a sealed packet of clue cards and hand them out to be read out loud, then everybody argues. As the evening goes on the table fills in a printed Gift Chain Grid and rebuilds who gave what to whom, because whoever received the gift that came out of the victim's own hands is the person the victim had leverage over. At the end everyone writes a name on an accusation sheet, and then you open the sealed solution and read the reveal script.

THE FOUR QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK BEFORE THEY BUY

Can the host play? Yes. The solution is a separate sealed PDF with a do-not-open cover page, and the 25 clue cards go into numbered packets you seal without reading. There is nothing for you to accidentally give away, because you honestly do not know. One honest caution: one of the eight booklets tells the person holding it that they are the murderer, so if you deal yourself in blind, that person could be you. If you would rather not take the chance, hand all eight booklets to your guests and take a witness seat. That matters more at a work party than anywhere else, since the person organizing it is usually the person who most wants to be at it.

How long does it last? 90 to 120 minutes for the full three round game, with a minute by minute timeline in the host guide. There is also a Short Play variant at 60 to 65 minutes, which is the one that fits a work lunch, an office afternoon with a hard stop, or a weeknight.

Does it work with four people? Yes, properly. Four is the floor, not a compromise. Each person holds two suspect booklets and reads both, using a printed pairing chart designed so no single player ends up holding both ends of something the table is meant to piece together out loud.

HOW IT WORKS AT 4 PLAYERS AND AT 20

There are always exactly eight suspects. Player count only changes who reads them. At 4 to 7 players, guests double up on the printed ladder. At 8, one booklet each, which is the version every clue card is printed for. At 9 to 20, everyone else takes a Witness role from the 12 witness cards. Witnesses hold real evidence, can be questioned, and can never be the murderer, and their card tells them so on the first line so they spend the night hunting instead of defending. Every role is written to be played by anyone, with no gender attached to any suspect. One piece of advice the host guide is firm about for a real workplace: do not cast anybody as their own job. Deal the booklets face down. It is funnier and it avoids the one awkward moment this game can produce.

WHAT YOU NEED FROM YOUR HOUSE OR YOUR OFFICE

A printer, and black and white is fine. Scissors or a paper trimmer. Four envelopes, any envelopes at all, three for the round packets and one for the solution. Something to seal them with. A pen for every player plus two spares, because people lose pens. A table or a kitchen island everyone can stand around. Optional and excellent, a small heavy object to serve as the token a player holds when it is their turn to speak. Cutting and sealing takes about fifteen minutes. You do not need costumes, props, a cooked meal, or a quiet room.

The host guide includes a full translation for a family gathering, and nothing needs rewriting. You say one sentence at the start, that this is set at a small company holiday party and your family gift exchange is the same thing with worse manners, then you swap the job titles for family roles as you introduce people. Every clue card, every statement and every piece of timing works untouched, because the puzzle is about a gift exchange and every family that runs one already knows the rules.
