A printable New Year's Eve murder mystery party game for 4 to 20 players, timed so the last line of the reveal lands at 11:59 PM and your guests are already standing when the real countdown starts. The host can play, because the answer arrives as a separate sealed file nobody opens until the end.

It is New Year's Eve on the thirtieth floor of a members-only supper room. Twenty years ago the owner opened it on borrowed money and a partnership deed that dissolves automatically at 12:00 AM on January 1, and everyone in the room has something that ends when the clock does. At 9:40 PM a server opens the terrace suite and finds the owner in the velvet chair. No wound, no struggle, a gold rimmed coupe on the carpet with a swallow of champagne still in it. The storm has closed the bridge, the elevators are held, and the detective cannot reach the building until midnight. Whoever the room names at midnight is who the detective takes.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE TABLE

Every guest is handed a suspect booklet, and every word they will ever say is already printed in it. No acting, no memorizing, no improvising. Three rounds, each built the same way. You read a round card aloud, each player reads their statement for that round straight off the page, then you break the seal on a packet of clue cards and hand them out to be read out loud, then everyone argues for ten minutes. At the end everybody fills in an accusation sheet, you open the sealed solution, and you read the reveal script while people hold their glasses.

THE FOUR QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK BEFORE THEY BUY

Can the host play? Yes. The solution is a separate sealed PDF with a do-not-open cover page, and the 24 clue cards go into packets you seal by the numbers printed on their backs, without reading a word of evidence. You will not know who did it. That is deliberate, and the host guide explains exactly how it holds. One honest caution: one of the eight booklets tells the person holding it that they are the murderer, so if you deal yourself in blind, that person could be you. If you would rather not take the chance, hand all eight booklets to your guests and take a witness seat.

How long does it last? The full countdown runs 90 to 120 minutes and is paced to a real midnight, with a printed clock telling you what happens at 10:30, at 11:15, at 11:45 and at 11:59. There is also a Standard 90 minute clock that runs midnight backward without breaks, and a 60 minute Short Play.

Does it work with four people? Yes, properly. Four is the floor, not a compromise. Each person holds two suspect booklets and reads both, using a printed doubling chart so no one player holds both halves of something the table is supposed to work out loud.

What exactly do I get? Two PDFs. The kit and the sealed solution, 102 pages together in the Letter edition, in Letter and A4. HOW IT WORKS AT 4 PLAYERS AND AT 20

There are always exactly eight suspects, and all 24 clue cards are always in play. Player count only changes who reads them. At 4 to 7 players, guests double up on the printed chart. At 8, one booklet each. At 9 to 20, extra guests take Witness roles from the 12 witness cards. Witnesses hold real evidence, get questioned like anyone else, and can never be the murderer, which their card says on the first line. The guide includes a witness allowance that moves the start of the evening earlier so that twelve extra readers still land you at midnight.

WHAT YOU NEED FROM YOUR HOUSE

A printer, and black and white is fine, since every page is designed to stay readable without color. Scissors or a paper trimmer. Six envelopes, three for the round packets and three for the sealed extras. A pen for every player. A clock everyone can see, or a phone propped against a bottle. A table, or two sofas and a coffee table, or a kitchen island, as long as everyone can hear everyone. Assembly takes about thirty minutes, and everything except the last two steps can be done days ahead. Free and worth doing: one gold rimmed glass alone on a tray somewhere visible all night, which you say nothing about, and a bag of confetti for midnight. You do not need costumes, a projector, an app, a phone signal or a second host.

THE 60 MINUTE SHORT PLAY, AND ANY NIGHT THAT IS NOT DECEMBER 31

Short Play is built into the kit. It runs round one, a single Bridge Card that carries the middle evidence, and round three, starting at 11:00 PM and revealing at midnight. Use it when guests are arriving late or the party is doing three other things. It is meant for groups up to about sixteen, and at seventeen or more the guide sends you to the Standard 90 instead so that no clue card ever has to be cut.

The countdown also works on any night of the year. Pick a midnight, set a loud phone alarm for it, and tell your guests that alarm is midnight. The guide reprints the whole timeline in T minus form so a Tuesday in March at 9:30 PM plays exactly as well. That makes this a New Year's Eve party game in December and an ordinary dinner party mystery in June.
