WHY MOST SHADE PLANT LISTS GET PEOPLE KILLED PLANTS

Almost every "shade garden" list assumes MOIST shade - a woodland floor with leaf litter and steady moisture. That is not what you have under a mature oak. You have DRY shade, and it is a different growing condition entirely.

Hosta, foamflower, Japanese painted fern, wild ginger, cinnamon fern - all genuinely shade plants, all documented by NC State as needing consistent moisture. Put them under an established tree and they decline for two seasons and die, and the homeowner concludes they have a black thumb.

So every plant in this guide is sorted by whether the source ACTUALLY says dry, with the wording quoted.

THE PART THAT MATTERS MORE THAN THE PLANT LIST

The reason dry-shade plantings fail is usually not the plants. It is what people do to the tree while installing them.

NC State Extension: "cutting or filling around roots will weaken and eventually kill valuable trees." That rules out the usual instinct - building a raised bed or spreading topsoil under the canopy to make planting easier.

80 percent of tree roots are in the top 12 inches of soil. Lose 50 percent of the roots and 50 percent of the canopy dies. The published protection zone is 1.25 feet of radius per inch of trunk diameter - a 20-inch oak means 25 feet.

This guide gives NC State's actual method for planting there instead: don't till within the drip line, dig individual holes, use quart-sized rather than gallon-sized plants, and choose long-lived plants so you only disturb that ground once.

THE HONEST TIMELINE

"Drought tolerant" describes year three. It does not describe the plant you put in the ground last Saturday, and that is where most dry-shade plantings are actually lost. The guide gives NC State's establishment figures and says plainly which numbers do not exist.
