A rare copper plate engraving of bees from an 1853 edition of Oliver Goldsmith's (1728-1774) classic "A History of the Earth and Animated Nature".

The Oliver Goldsmith hand-colored copper plates are highly prized for their beautiful illustrations with vibrant colors. This is a +168-year-old original, not a reproduction!
The vibrant hand-colored bees on the plate include the honey bee, common humble bee, lapidary bee, carder bee, Donovan's humble bee, Harris' bumble bee, and the false humble bees.

This 9.5"x 5.75" engraving has been professionally float mounted on 11x14 olive grey matboard and is ready to pop into a frame. It is printed on ivory-colored medium weight paper, almost cardstock weight, and is blank on the back. The history was published in 1853 by Blackie and Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London; I've included is a copy of the title page.

This rare antique engraving is in very good condition for its age. Foxing (age spots) as shown in the photos, and there is a slight waviness of paper on the top edge. The float mount highlights the age and loveliness of the artwork. (Frame is not included.)

The first edition (in eight volumes) appeared in London in 1774. The work sought to draw together virtually all that was known about the planet earth, its plants and animals, and even its human inhabitants described from a biological perspective. Goldsmith's Animated Nature went through over twenty editions into the Victorian era and served as a popular source of information about the natural world.

The perfect gift for a friend who loves bees, antiques, and has eclectic taste in decor.
