Painted outdoors despite the violent gusts of the Provençal Mistral wind, the canvas is constructed through heavy, unmixed applications of paint worked rapidly with brushes and palette knives. Technical examinations and X-ray analysis conducted by museum conservators revealed that airborne grains of soil and dried vegetation were blown directly into the wet paint layers during execution, permanently preserving the raw physical environment of Provence within the surface. The swirling rhythm of the clouds, the undulating lines of the Alpilles mountains, and the golden ripe wheat create a unified cosmic landscape vibrating with intense kinetic energy and spiritual longing. Van Gogh considered this canvas one of his most accomplished summer landscapes, capturing the essence of the southern French terroir.
