Vincent van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889) was conceived during his voluntary convalescence at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Fascinated by the towering Mediterranean cypress trees that dotted the countryside, van Gogh regarded them as an essential motif equal in importance to his earlier sunflowers, describing them in letters to his brother Theo as dark splashes of pure rhythm against sunlit fields. Painted outdoors despite the violent gusts of the Provençal Mistral wind, the canvas is constructed through heavy, unmixed applications of paint worked rapidly with brushes and palette knives. Technical examinations and X-ray analysis conducted by museum conservators revealed that airborne grains of soil and dried vegetation were blown directly into the wet paint layers during execution, permanently preserving the raw physical environment of Provence within the surface. The swirling rhythm of the clouds, the undulating lines of the Alpilles mountains, and the golden ripe wheat create a unified cosmic landscape vibrating with intense kinetic energy and spiritual longing. Van Gogh considered this canvas one of his most accomplished summer landscapes, capturing the essence of the southern French terroir. The painting entered the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1993 through purchase via The Annenberg Foundation Gift (Accession No. 1993.132), where it remains one of the defining monuments of Post-Impressionist landscape art.
