⚡ ENERGY COST PER UNIT TRACKER — EXCEL & GOOGLE SHEETS

An energy bill tells you what you spent.

It does not tell you what a thing costs to make. It does not tell you which of
your machines drew power into an empty building, or why the same product cost
more in March than it did in October.

A week is 168 hours long. You make things for some of them. The site draws power
for all of them, and the meter does not know the difference.

---

NINE LINKED TABS

· Start Here — what each tab expects and where to type.
· Setup — two weekly charges, your rate bands, your meters.
· Weeks — one row a week: how many you made, and for how many hours.
· Readings — one row per week, per meter, per rate band.
· By Meter — where it went, and how much went into an empty building.
· By Rate Band — what the clock costs you.
· Running Nothing — the uncomfortable page.
· Cost Per Unit — the number this file exists for.
· Overview — the whole year on one screen.

---

FROM THE WORKED YEAR INSIDE THE FILE

Electricity used 4,138,326
What the electricity cost $931,170
Standing and capacity charges $31,096
THE WHOLE BILL $962,266

Units made 3,768,850
COST PER UNIT $0.2553

Hours you were not making anything 5,176
Share of the period 59.3%
Electricity drawn in them 785,213
PAID TO PRODUCE NOTHING $202,602
Share of the whole bill 21.1%

---

ONE NUMBER PER METER MAKES THE WHOLE THING WORK

Against each meter in Setup there is a single figure: what it draws when
nothing at all is being made.

Walk the site on a Sunday morning with the plant off and read each meter. That
figure, typed once, is what lets the file separate the electricity that made
something from the electricity that did not.

In the worked year the material dryers drew 58.0 kW with the plant shut. They
are never switched off, and 39.0% of everything that meter used all year —
$63,046 of it — was drawn while nothing whatever was being made.

---

$0.2307 IN A BUSY WEEK. $0.3032 IN A QUIET ONE.

Same machines. Same tariff. Same people.

The fixed part of an energy bill does not shrink when you slow down. The
standing charge still arrives, the capacity charge still arrives, and the dryers
still run. So every unit made in a quiet week has to carry more of it — 31%
more, in the worked year.

Only the denominator changed. Which is worth knowing before you quote a slow
month at last year's rate.

---

3.6% ON ONE METER. 39.0% ON ANOTHER.

The granulator only draws power when something is going through it. The dryers
draw it every hour of every week of the year. Same site, same bill, two
completely different conversations.

And the biggest thing on the bill is not the thing worth changing: the moulding
presses are 43.2% of the whole bill and only 6.6% of what they used was drawn
making nothing.

---

WHAT THE CLOCK COSTS YOU

Peak-rate hours were 8.6% of the electricity and 18.8% of the bill, at 4.17
times what the cheapest band cost.

The file prices the gap and works out what every tenth of it you can move to a
cheaper hour is worth: $13,305 a year. One shift changed, one dryer on a timer,
one batch run overnight.

It does not tell you which tenth you can move. That is a production question and
you know the answer better than any spreadsheet does.

---

THE FORTNIGHT EVERYBODY WAS OFF

Two weeks with the plant shut used 52,793 units of electricity and cost $11,477,
and produced not one thing.

The file finds those weeks on its own, from the only two figures you typed: the
date and how many you made.

---

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY TYPE

Three things a week: the week, how many you made, and how many hours you were
actually making them. Then one line per meter reading, straight off the bill or
off the sub-meters.

If you have a single site meter and a flat tariff, that is one reading row a
week and every other tab still answers every question.

---

WHAT YOU GET

Two workbooks and a guide. One workbook has the year above already filled in, so
you can see what every column expects before you touch anything. The second is
the same file completely blank — same nine tabs, same formulas — ready for your
own readings from the first row. The guide is a plain-English PDF.

EXCEL AND GOOGLE SHEETS

Built as .xlsx. Excel 2016 or newer on Windows or Mac, and Google Sheets through
File → Import → Upload. LibreOffice too. No macros, no add-ons, no account to
create, nothing to install, no subscription. You download a file and it is yours.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK

We only have one meter and a flat tariff.
Then it is one reading a week and one rate band, and every other tab works
exactly the same. Sub-metering makes it sharper; it is not a condition of using
the file.

We do not make units. We do covers, jobs, rooms, tonnes.
Type whatever you count in Setup and the file uses your word everywhere.

We do not know what the plant draws when it is off.
Read the meters once with everything shut. It takes twenty minutes and it is the
most useful twenty minutes in the file.

Can we use it for gas or water?
Yes. Put them in as meters with their own price. Keep one file per utility if
the units differ.

Is this only for factories?
No. Anywhere with a bill, a meter and something you count: a bakery, a laundry,
a cold store, a print works, a farm, a leisure centre, a workshop.

---

WHAT THIS IS NOT

Not a monitoring system, a smart meter or a building-management platform.
Nothing is wired in and nothing is installed. Not accounting, bookkeeping or tax
software. Not connected to anything — nothing syncs, nothing logs in. It does not
know your supply contract. Not energy, tax or legal advice.

It will not switch the dryers off for you. It will tell you what leaving them on
costs, per year and per unit you sell.

Sold through my Etsy shop, ThePlainLedger, so the download, the payment and the
buyer protection are all handled by Etsy. I never ask for access to anything —
no password, no supplier account, no meter data feed. You download a file; that
is the whole transaction.

The example business, its meters and its tariff are invented. The arithmetic
behind every figure is not.
