WHAT THIS ONE DOES THAT THE CHEAP TRACKERS DON'T

1. It works out your real miles per month.
Most trackers only ever record mileage, which is useless for planning. The Mileage Rate Calculator page has you log the odometer once a month; divide by the months elapsed and you have your true rate. Now any mileage interval converts into a predicted DATE. A 10,000-mile service on a car doing 600 miles a month is correctly forecast at around 16 months — not chased anxiously at 12, and not left until 30.

2. It tracks the jobs with no warning light.
The Time-Based Register covers the work that never illuminates anything on the dash and never trips a mileage counter:
- Brake fluid, typically 2 years. DOT 4 is hygroscopic — it pulls in moisture, the boiling point drops, and you get a long soft pedal under heavy or repeated braking.
- Coolant and antifreeze, commonly 5 years on long-life OAT types.
- Cambelt. Manufacturers publish a years figure as well as a miles figure. Rubber, tensioners and idlers age on the driveway whether you drive or not.
- Tyres. Space to record the four-digit week/year code moulded into the sidewall. Ageing sidewalls craze and crack long before the tread reaches the 1.6mm legal limit.
- Air conditioning. Refrigerant loss runs at roughly 10 per cent a year, so it fades rather than fails.
- Battery, typically 4 to 5 years.

3. It chases last year's advisories.
An advisory on the test certificate is the tester telling you what is going to fail next year. The advisory action tracker gives every advisory a line, a decision and a date. There is also room to note that a test can be renewed up to one calendar month minus a day early while keeping the same anniversary date — handy if you would rather not be off the road in the week it expires.
