Seller's description

A 34-page psychodynamic compendium on the one comparison that has entered our consulting rooms without being invited, the idea that the machine reasons and we feel.

That formulation is flattering, and false in both directions. Our work is intensely inferential, while a language model produces coherence rather than understanding. What actually separates the two is narrower and more useful than warmth against logic, because only one party can be changed by what it receives and pays a price for what it says.

It is written colleague to colleague, from a psychodynamic and relational position, and it proceeds by distinctions rather than recommendations.

INSIDE
• What emotional intelligence consists of in clinical work once niceness and the well-timed validating phrase are removed from the definition
• Containment as the function at stake, and why a system that cannot be altered by what it receives can reflect but not contain
• Where a clinician's capacity comes from, and what it means that the machine's has no development at all
• Five configurations that look identical in session (scaffolded processing, intellectual defence, compliance, symbolic deficit, manic reparation) and the two differentiators that tell them apart
• The seduction of coherence, why agreeableness is not a defect awaiting a fix, and why the imitable parts of our practice are the ones we do well on a bad day
• Transference and countertransference when the comparison is in the room, including four clinician reactions that are enactments
• Setting and technique, which means taking the formulation as an event rather than a proposition, protecting not-knowing, and recognising why competing on clarity is a losing move
• The clinician's own use of these tools, from notes and consent to the difference between a task and the part of the work that is the treatment
• Three composite vignettes, eight common errors and a seven-part observation grid for the first months of work

There are no protocols, decision trees or promises. Empirical claims are reported with their status (trial, preprint, survey or contested construct), and where I propose a way of thinking rather than report a finding, I say so.

FORMAT
Instant download. PDF, 34 pages, 6 x 9 in, printable on A4 or Letter with "fit to page".

This is professional educational material for mental health practitioners. It does not replace clinical training, supervision or the judgement of the individual clinician, it is not a diagnostic manual, and it does not establish a standard of care. Clinical vignettes are composite and fictional. Licensed for use in your own clinical practice, not for resale or redistribution.

WHO WROTE IT
I'm Alberto Del Bove, a psychologist and psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist trained in Rome, in private practice with adults. Everything in The Consulting Room is written and clinically reviewed by me, and most of it started as material I needed in my own sessions before it became something to share.

If you have a question before buying, or you want to know whether this fits the way you work, send me a message through Etsy and I will answer personally. If it turns out to be useful, a short review helps other clinicians find it.
