BOOK AND READING TRACKER SPREADSHEET — thirteen connected tabs for Excel and Google Sheets

Most book trackers count your books. This one does the arithmetic. Log a book once, and the file tells you whether you are ahead of or behind your reading goal, exactly how many pages a day would put you back on it, how long your to-be-read pile would take at the pace you actually read, and, in January, writes your Year in Books for you.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

• The pace math nobody else does. Pace is an even share of your goal for the share of the year gone by. The Dashboard says "3 behind" or "2 ahead" in whole books, then the useful number: pages a day to finish the year on goal, using your own average book length. Change the goal or finish a book and both numbers move.
• Your TBR, with a date on it. Every book on the pile carries how many days it would take you at your real pace, and the pile as a whole says how many months it is. Priority 1 sorts to the top as Next up.
• Works in Excel 2016 and later AND Google Sheets AND Apple Numbers. Portable formulas only, no dynamic arrays, no add-ons, no account. Most trackers on this shelf need Excel 365 or are Google-Sheets-only.
• Your Year in Books, written for you. Longest, shortest, fastest read, highest rated, first and last, most-read author, favorite genre, busiest month, and a paragraph in sentences, all read from the log. Print it in January.
• Real dates, real days. Days to read and pages a day are worked out from the dates you type. The Reading Calendar shades every day you had a book open.

THE THIRTEEN TABS

1. Start Here — the four things to do first, and what every tab is for
2. Setup — the year, your goal in books and pages, how fast you read, and the dropdown lists
3. Dashboard — books, pages, hours, average stars, ahead or behind, pages a day, your TBR in months, reading now, books by month, top genres
4. Reading Log — the master list: title, author, series, genre, format, pages, started, finished, status, stars (half stars allowed), source, reread, notes. 250 rows
5. TBR — the to-be-read pile in priority order, with days at your pace and the next five on top. 60 rows
6. Series — every series you have started: read, left, next up, average stars, last finished
7. Wishlist & Loans — books to buy with a running total, library due dates that flag overdue and due soon, and who has your copy of what
8. Monthly Wrap-Up — books, pages, average stars, the best book and the longest, every month, plus this month in a sentence
9. Reading Calendar — every day of the year, shaded when you had a book open, darker when you had two
10. Challenge — twenty-four prompts, each pointed at a book you finished; author, stars and date come across from the log
11. Notes & Quotes — the book journal: in one line, what you loved, what did not work, the favorite quote and who you would recommend it to
12. Year in Books — the recap, written from the log, ready to print
13. How the Math Works — every formula in plain English, and the honest warnings

WHAT YOU GET

• The workbook in four colorways: Colorful, Editorial, Light and Dark. Same tabs, same formulas, pick the one you can look at all day.
• A two-page quick-start PDF: the four things to do first, what every tab is for, and the honest warnings.
• A full video walkthrough on YouTube, linked in the file and below.
• A worked sample year (24 books, a 40-book goal, a 27-book TBR) so every tab has something to show on the first open. Type over it.

WORKS WHERE YOU WORK

Microsoft Excel 2016 or later on Mac or PC. Google Sheets — upload the .xlsx to Drive and open it. Apple Numbers opens it too. Portable formulas only: no macros, no add-ons, no login, no subscription. Nothing to install and nothing that expires. Undated: change the year on Setup and use it again.

FOUR HONEST WARNINGS, BECAUSE YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY

1. It does not pull book covers or data from the internet. Nothing here connects to Goodreads, a library or a bookstore. You type the title and the pages. That is also why it works everywhere and never breaks.
2. Hours are an estimate: pages divided by the pages an hour you type on Setup. Audiobooks use their print page count.
3. Series, authors and titles match on the exact text. Spell an author the same way every time or the count splits.
4. The pace math treats every day the same. It does not know you read more in December.
