Build a steel garden fence that never rots at the bottom.

The panel hangs 4 inches clear of the ground. Only four pickets go into the soil; the other sixteen stop above the grass, so they never stand in wet ground and cannot rust from the bottom edge. The short pickets are left open at the base, so any condensation drains straight out.

That one decision is the whole design. Everything else follows from it.

WHAT YOU GET

Four dimensioned drawing sheets, a ten-step assembly guide and an Excel material calculator — each in both metric and imperial.

THE CALCULATOR

Type in how many metres or feet of fence you want. It gives you the number of panels, every piece to cut, how many lengths of tube to buy, the caps, the discs, the wire, the paint, the weight and the cost.

Real supplier prices are already in it, checked September 2026 — euros on the metric tab, dollars on the imperial one. Overwrite them with your own and you have a quote.

Section 2 holds the panel dimensions. Change the panel length, the height, the picket count or the ground clearance and everything below updates, including the gap between pickets.

THE DRAWINGS

Sheet 1 — Front elevation and picket spacing, with a 2:1 detail of the tube section
Sheet 2 — Rear elevation and rail positions, dimensioned to centrelines
Sheet 3 — Side view, plastic cap detail, and the assembly sequence
Sheet 4 — Cut list, bill of materials and full technical data

THE ASSEMBLY GUIDE

Ten steps, one page each, with an isometric drawing and a zoomed detail on every one. Laying out the parts, cutting the long pickets, clamping the rails, the spacer block that gives you the same gap every time without measuring, checking the diagonals before you weld out, and painting before the caps go in.

SPECIFICATION

Panel: 72" x 16" (2000 x 400 mm)
Height above ground: 20" (500 mm)
Ground clearance: 4" (100 mm)
Pickets: 20 per panel, first and last flush with the ends
Gap between pickets: exactly 3" (84 mm)
Pickets into the soil: 4, buried 12" (300 mm)
Tube: 3/4" x 3/4" x 16 ga (20 x 20 x 1.5 mm)
Welded joints: 40 per panel
Cuts: 22 per panel
Caps: 24 per panel
Weight: approx. 27 lb (11.8 kg) per panel, unpainted
Finish: anthracite

For 30 ft of fence: 5 panels, 220 ft of tube, 13 sticks of 20 ft, 120 caps, about 133 lb of steel.
For 10 m of fence: 5 panels, 68 m of tube, 13 lengths of 6 m, 120 caps, about 59 kg of steel.

NOT ONLY A GARDEN FENCE

The same panel works as raised bed edging, a path border, a front garden railing, a planter screen, or a terrace divider for a cafe. It is modular: any run in 6 ft or 2 m steps, straight or stepped.

Because it stands on four pickets and clears the ground, it also suits gravel, bark and planting beds where a fence with a bottom rail would sit in the wet.

TOOLS YOU NEED

MIG welder, or a stick welder with a 2.5 mm rod
Angle grinder, cutting and flap discs
Clamps and a magnetic square
Tape measure, spirit level, and a 3" spacer block
Primer and anthracite topcoat

No CNC. No press brake. No tube bender.

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate. If you can cut square and weld a lap joint, you can build it. Twenty pickets on two rails is repetitive work, not difficult work.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Welders and DIY builders who want a weekend panel with the maths already done
Garden and landscaping firms who need a repeatable edge that quotes by the metre
Fabrication shops looking for a product to price and sell by the run

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT

You are buying PDF drawings and an Excel workbook, not a fence. Nothing is shipped. The files are available as soon as your payment clears and they stay in your Etsy account.

WHAT IS NOT IN THE PLANS

Ground fixing is left to you. The drawings show the four long pickets going 12" into the soil; whether you set them in concrete, compacted gravel or rammed earth depends on your ground and your frost depth. Check what is normal where you live.

The same goes for joining panels end to end, and for sloping ground.

SAFETY AND RULES

These are DIY construction plans, not stamped engineering drawings. This is a decorative garden panel — it is not a security fence and not a pool safety barrier, and it is not designed or certified for either.

Fence heights, boundary positions and permitted structures vary by country and often by council. Check your local rules before you build.

LICENCE
