How free apps make money, why that video was recommended to you, and what
a sponsored post actually is. Not a warning. An explanation.
For grades 4 to 8.

WHAT IT COVERS
- Why is it free? Somebody is paying, and it is not you
- Six kinds of advert, only two of which look like adverts
- What #ad, gifted, affiliate link and paid partnership actually mean
- Why you were shown that video, and what the recommendation is for
- Autoplay, streaks, infinite scroll and notifications, named and explained
- Follow the money on one video you saw this week
- Spotting images of things that never happened
- Three questions for checking any claim
- Which reviews were bought
- Why you clicked that thumbnail
- An honest audit of your own feed
- What you would tell a nine year old getting their first phone

WHY IT IS NOT A WARNING
Children ignore warnings and remember explanations. A child who
understands why a video was recommended behaves differently from one who
has been told to watch less. Nothing in here says screens are bad. It says
somebody is making money, and here is exactly how.

FOR PARENTS
Several pages ask your child to look at their real feed and work out why
they were shown something. That only works if it is not used as evidence
against them. Most adults cannot explain what an affiliate link is or why
streaks exist either, so doing it alongside them works better than
supervising.

This is about advertising and attention, not online safety. Passwords,
strangers and what to do if something upsetting appears are a separate
conversation, and an important one.
