Maya and the Two-Wheel Bike

A Brave Like Me story. Printable digital picture book - 20 pages, one PDF, instant download.

Maya's bike used to have four wheels - two big ones and two little training wheels that kept her steady, like a hug on each side. This morning, Grandpa Theo has a wrench. And a grin.

Clink. Clank. Now the bike stands on two wheels, tall and tippy and brand-new scary. Maya pushes off. One pedal, two pedals - THUMP. She falls six times. This is the book about the six, and about the seventh time she stands up, and about the moment the wobble goes quiet and the bike just rolls.

Why this one

• For the week the training wheels come off - or any skill that has to be fallen at first
• Nobody holds the seat the whole way; the grown-up stands back and believes in her, loud
• "Falling is not the opposite of riding. Falling is part of riding."

About the series

Brave Like Me is a set of gentle read-aloud stories about everyday courage - the ordinary scary things that are genuinely big when you are five. Every book lands the same honest way: brave is not the absence of scared, it is doing the thing with the scared still there. Grown-ups in these books do not fix the fear or talk the child out of it; they stand close by while the child does the hard thing. Other Brave Like Me stories are listed in this shop.
