RED HELEN — BLACK & GOLD

An elegant study in shadow, ivory, and warm gold. This one-of-one framed artwork presents a real preserved Red Helen swallowtail, Papilio helenus, against a deep charcoal-black backdrop, finished with a black shadow-box frame and ornate antique-gold-tone corners.

The composition lets the butterfly command attention: sweeping dark wings, luminous ivory markings, and a delicate sequence of ember-orange accents. Rich in detail yet beautifully restrained, it brings the fascination of natural history into a refined decorative object.

THE SPECIMEN

This butterfly is presented underside-forward, revealing the intricate ventral pattern of its wings. Fine pale lines trace the smoky brown-black forewings, while ivory-white patches brighten the hindwings. Along the scalloped lower edges, warm orange crescents and ring-like markings lead the eye toward the long, rounded swallowtail extensions.

The result is a striking balance of graphic contrast and organic detail. At a distance, the silhouette feels bold and sculptural; closer viewing reveals the subtle wing texture, delicate veins, and precise arrangement of the natural markings.

THE BLACK & GOLD COMPOSITION

A quiet, dark background gives the specimen space to stand apart. The landscape arrangement follows the butterfly's open wings, while the black frame provides a clean architectural boundary.

Four ornate gold-tone corner embellishments introduce an antique-inspired flourish. Their warm finish echoes the orange accents in the butterfly without competing with its ivory markings. The complete effect is richly gothic, with the restraint of a carefully curated natural-history display.
