We received it from our neighbor after the postal carrier delivered it to the wrong address. The little trees are beautiful: Healthy and happy after their long journey.

    Thank you!!

Unlike with many sellers claiming 'rarity' for their plants, Herrania Umbratica is ranked as Engangered on the IUCN red list. H. Umbratica is quite the rarity indeed and can be transported and sold provided it derives from plants not bought from the wild.

This plant is not as strong as the Trinitario, with some historic leaf bud scars being visible due to leaves trying to form and then dropping off if conditions are not quite right. Some discoloration is present on the leaves, which could be a nutrient deficiency but looks to be rectifiable.

Considering these plants are hard to find and will almost have no textbook guidance as to their care, it was worth the money.

When I lived in Jersey (Channel Islands) close to France, I tried my hand at growing chocolate. The plants germinated successfully but all died in winter despite my best efforts to keep them warm. My second trial happened within a few weeks of moving to Los Angeles and turned out much better! I currently have three 6 ft Criollo plants descended from the old plantations of Puerto Rico, so I thought I'd buy the Trinitario variety and see how things grow in Florida.

This plant is rigorous and without any of the brown dropping leaf buds which is common of an 'ahumid' environment. My best method is to place in a big pot with perlite at the bottom for drainage. Grow the plant in 50/50 soil/worm castings, but before you plant, dust the roots with mycorrhizal fungi.
