I have always been fascinated by Greek mythology. The stories are so beautiful and romantic. The gods and goddesses take on such human traits, yet are unobtainable and unreachable.
According to ancient Greek mythology, Athena was the daughter of Zeus and his first wife, Metis, whose name meant "wisdom." Metis warned Zeus that their first son would be more powerful than Zeus himself, which agitated Zeus so much that when Metis became pregnant he swallowed whole Metis and their unborn child. This gave him a headache, which he cured by splitting his head open with an ax. (Zeus may have been powerful but he wasn't necessarily smart.) From the wound came forth Athena, fully grown.
The owl is Athena's attribute or mascot. According to the mythology, Athena at times also took the very form of her owl.
This elegant and classic necklace features an ancient coin that many consider to be "the ancient coin". It is an ancient Greek silver tetradrachm struck 393-300 . The front of the coin shows Athenas owl- with an olive sprig on one side, and the three Greek letters AOE on the other side- which was the symbol for Athens.
The back side has been cut out so you can see the lovely profile of Athena- elegant and other worldly. and in this particular coin, looking VERY gorgeous very regal profile.
This coin is in a wonderful condition- 100% authentic. It is almost 2400 years old!! The coin itself is quite heavy and thick- it weighs in at 16.95 grams of solid silver, and it has a nice raised image.
I have set this beauty in fine silver and gave it a frame of hammered silver.
It hangs from a hand made sterling bale of the same .
It has a strand of natural faceted tanzanites- goes beautifully with the silver.
The color of the tanzanites is that purple/blue that only tanzanites have- really gorgeous.
A phenomenal piece of history.
