100% original artwork designed in Odawara, Japan. Not a copy or reproduction of old prints.

Original artworks in the style of shin-hanga, the "new prints" of Japan.

Shin-hanga was a Japanese woodblock print movement that began in the Taisho era (1912-1926) and continued into the early Showa era. It kept the traditional teamwork of ukiyo-e (artist, carver and printer) but added Western ideas of light, shadow and perspective, with soft color gradations called bokashi.

The Taisho era is remembered in Japan as the time of "Taisho Roman" (Taisho romance), a short period when Western fashion and city life mixed with Japanese tradition. Young women wore bold meisen silk kimono and arrow-pattern yagasuri, tied big ribbons in their hair and carried lace parasols. Motor cars, mountain railways, Western-style hotels and cafes arrived in resort towns like Hakone.

This set imagines that world in Hakone, near my home in Odawara: Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji, a Western-style mountain hotel with motor cars, the Hakone Tozan mountain railway (opened in 1919), and the hot spring town of Hakone-Yumoto through the seasons, with its geisha, rickshaws, cherry blossoms and snow.

Each painting is mounted like a museum print, with a short English caption below it: the place, the present-day town and prefecture, a line about the place, and a note that it is an imagined Taisho-era scene, not present-day Japan. These are my own compositions, not copies of any existing shin-hanga print, and every painting carries my red seal 泉 (Izumi).

ABOUT THE ART
Every painting here is my own original work. They are not copies or reproductions of Hokusai, Hiroshige or any other existing artwork.
These are imaginative paintings, not photographs. Places such as Lake Ashi, Mount Fuji, Miyanoshita and Hakone-Yumoto are painted as I imagine them, so the scenery, buildings, decorations and their positions may differ from the real places.
I live in Odawara, near Hakone, Japan. I designed these paintings with AI image tools, then selected, edited and finished each one by hand.
