A pale concrete pier with a diagonal beam of sunlight against a dark slate wall, and Z8 in large silver serif capitals over a spaced BMW 2001 caption give the artwork presence across a room. The silver Z8, low and seen from its left front corner with the top folded away, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 2001 Z8 roadster in Titan Silver Metallic over red and black Nappa leather, a left-hand-drive car. The Z8 was built from 1999 to 2003 and 5,703 were made in all, its 4.9-litre S62 V8, shared with the E39 M5, makes 400 PS through a six-speed manual gearbox, and Henrik Fisker styled the body as a modern echo of the 1950s BMW 507.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
