Description

Dimensions: 6 inches x 4 inches x 2 inches

Weight: 1.250 grams

The word Anasazi belongs to the Navajo language and means "the ancient ones". This tribe is thought to have flourished and mysteriously disappeared between 550 and 1300 CE in the area of Mesa Verde , Colorado in the US. Historians, archaeologists, researchers and photographers have studied the tribe because many elements of their origins and their evolution remain an enigma.

Beyond the advanced architecture and advanced, for its time, population, their link to the ancient Greek civilization is also noteworthy. While the word Anaasází in Navajo means the "Ancient Ones" or "Ancient Enemy", there is also another explanation if you look at the word from a Greek perspective. In Greek Anasazi is analysed in ‘Anasa’ and ‘Zi’. The first word in Greek means ‘Breath’ and the second ‘Lives’. One of the speculations is that ‘Anasa’ was the Queen of the Anasazi and specifically one of the Queens of the Amazons. So the name translates to ‘Long live the Queen’.

In New Mexico, researchers found a cave painting that appears to depict a supernova explosion; the orientation of a crescent moon and stars indicate that the art may represent the Crab Nebula, formed in 1054 A.D. by supernova. The Anasazi way of life remains somewhat of a mystery, but researchers found that the tribe built a solar observatory, suggesting that the sky was extremely important to the Anasazi way of life.

A recently discovered site called Penasco Blanco shows a depiction on a cave wall of what must be a supernova explosion (see picture below). The relative orientations of the crescent moon and the star make it very likely that this is a recording of the supernova which created the Crab Nebula in 1054 A.D. This supernova, which would have been about five times brighter than Venus for about three weeks, was also recorded by Chinese astronomers. Another very interesting site is called the Anasazi sun dagger. It is a spiral design traced into a cave wall, and during midsummer, midwinter, and the equinoxes it is perfectly bisected or surrounded by daggers of sunlight which enter the specially placed windows. The Anasazi also built a solar observatory called Hovenweep Castle at Four Corners. All of this evidence points to the fact that the Anasazi were quite experienced sky-watchers, as are their probable descendents, the Pueblo Indians.
