• 49 CFR 396.11 (DVIR): a written report at the end of each day's work on each vehicle, covering the 11 listed parts. The carrier repairs and certifies before the vehicle runs again. Records are kept 3 months.
• No-defect DVIRs: drivers are not required to prepare a report when no defect is found or reported. This applies to property carriers since 2014 and passenger carriers since 2020. Your carrier can still require one, and many do.
• 49 CFR 396.13: before driving, be satisfied the vehicle is safe, review the last DVIR and sign it if defects were noted.
• 49 CFR 392.7 and 392.8: the parts that must be in good working order and the emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, triangles) that must be in place.
• Updated for 2026: spare fuses are no longer a federal requirement (removed April 20, 2026), so the form shows them as optional.
• 49 CFR 392.9 cargo checks: within the first 50 miles, then every 3 hours or 150 miles, or at each change of duty status.
