ABOUT THE PAINTING
Henry Fuseli painted The Nightmare in 1781 and showed it at the Royal Academy the following year. London was shocked, and Fuseli became famous almost overnight. A woman lies flung across her bed in a white gown, her head hanging down. The demon of her dream sits on her chest and stares straight out at us.

Fuseli sold the painting for twenty guineas. An engraving of it sold so widely that its publisher earned more than five hundred pounds. Look closely at the horse's blank white eyes. On the back of the canvas is an unfinished portrait of a young woman, perhaps Anna Landolt, whom Fuseli had hoped to marry. The original hangs in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
