On the longest day of the year, two hundred and forty guests drove up the Hudson Valley to Wren Hollow, a restored dairy barn with a lawn that runs down to a lake, to watch June Okafor marry Theo Lindqvist. Everything was perfect, because Celeste Vane had planned it. Celeste had planned weddings for two senators and a pop star. She had also made the bride cry four times that week.

The lawn was soft from the afternoon sprinklers, so Wren Hollow ran a shoe check in the old tack room: guests swapped their shoes for white canvas slippers, and every pair got a numbered ticket. While they danced, a live illustrator sat by the shelves and sketched every pair for the guest book — two hundred and forty little drawings. (The five bridesmaids checked in matching satin ballet flats with little bows, and danced in their slippers like everyone else.)

At 9:05 pm Celeste moved the cake cutting to suit the photographer, without asking anyone. The bride took off her shoe and threw it at her. It missed. The whole barn saw it.

The Lindqvist family diamond — the bride’s *something borrowed* — sparkled on June’s hand all night. It usually lives in the family safe in Rhinebeck, which several Lindqvists know how to open.

The police arrested June Okafor. But before they took her away, she slipped you a note:

“Detective — Yes, I threw my shoe at her. Two hundred and forty people saw me do it, and my new mother-in-law will never let me forget it. No, I did not kill her. At a quarter past ten, on the happiest night of my life, Celeste Vane was found in the lake by the dock. Somebody walked down to that dock in the dark and walked back up again — and nobody can tell me who. Every guest left their shoes at the shoe check. Our live illustrator sketched every single pair for the guest book, all two hundred and forty, and the attendant kept a ledger. I have sent you both, with everything else I could find. Please. Somebody wore their own shoes to that dock and put them back on the shelf. Find out whose.”
