These are probably French made antique mother of pearl opera glasses bought by an optical shop in Germany for glasses sales there. The case is made of leather which is time worn and scuffed and opens to royal purple satin lining with the name of the optician and his address as advertising. Banded inside with purple velvet. Clasp closes firmly and has a brass button with a raised "R" inside a triangle which is the logo for the original manufacturing company. The mother of pearl is hand applied and the eyepieces and turn knob are also mother of pearl. Solid brass and black enameled lens cases. When you raise these to look through them there is a slight click of left lens movement...1 mm crack in right underside pearl case, but stable..and, a right hand loop on the glasses for a hand ribbon.

Optics are good. The expansion of the lenses is smooth.
Almost 2 1/4"H closed lenses to 3" expanded...3 15/16" across the front of the lenses.
Signed in the case in gold lettering: Peter van Brakel
Date: approximately 1850-1900
