Punti salienti
Thirteen historic flags of the American Revolution as cut-ready files for Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters (Glowforge, xTool, LightBurn), for the 250th anniversary, 1776-2026. Make layered flag ornaments for Christmas, wall signs, decals and engraved keepsakes.
Each flag is drawn by code from its documented historical design: the right stripe order, canton, star count, star points and arrangement, colours and mottoes. Where no original survives or historians disagree, we say so (see below), including the Betsy Ross story itself.
★ THE FLAGS
• Betsy Ross Flag (Pattern used after 1777): 13 stripes, red outermost; blue canton over 7 stripes; 13 white five-point stars in a circle, points outward.
• Hopkinson Flag (c. 1777 (reconstruction)): 13 stripes, 6 red on white (white outermost); 13 white six-point stars in staggered rows of 3-2-3-2-3.
• Cowpens Flag (3rd Maryland) (Associated with Cowpens, January 17, 1781): 13 stripes, red outermost; blue canton; 12 white stars in a ring around a 13th star.
• Grand Union Flag (Continental Colours) (1775-1777): 13 red and white stripes with the British Union of 1606 (crosses of St George and St Andrew) in the canton.
• Bennington Flag (Associated with Bennington, August 16, 1777): 13 stripes, white outermost; tall blue canton over 9 stripes; '76' under an arch of 11 seven-point stars, with a star in each upper corner.
• Gadsden Flag (1775-1776): Yellow field; a coiled rattlesnake poised to strike; the motto underneath.
• Culpeper Flag (1775): White field; coiled rattlesnake; THE CULPEPER MINUTE MEN above, DONT TREAD ON ME below, LIBERTY OR DEATH at the sides.
• Appeal to Heaven (Pine Tree) Flag (1775-1776): White field; green pine tree; the motto AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN.
• Moultrie Flag (1775-1776): Blue field with a white crescent in the upper corner by the staff.
• Liberty Flag (Later tradition of the 1776 flag): The Moultrie flag with LIBERTY on the crescent.
• Serapis Flag (1779): 13 stripes of red, white and blue; blue canton; 13 white eight-point stars in rows of 4-5-4.
• Guilford Courthouse Flag (Associated with Guilford Courthouse, March 15, 1781): 13 red and blue stripes, blue outermost; a long white canton; 13 blue eight-point stars.
• Brandywine Flag (1777): Red field; in the canton a small stars and stripes: 7 white stripes and a white box of 13 red eight-point stars, 4-5-4.

★ HISTORY, HONESTLY
• Betsy Ross Flag: The story that Betsy Ross made the first flag was first made public by her grandson William Canby in 1870. No document from the 1770s confirms it, and historians treat it as a family tradition.
• Hopkinson Flag: No drawing by Hopkinson survives. This layout is the standard modern reconstruction, based on his other designs.
• Cowpens Flag (3rd Maryland): A 1970s study by the Maryland State Archivist and the Smithsonian dated the surviving flag to the 19th century, so its link to Cowpens is disputed. The surviving stars form an oval; this file uses the familiar circle.
• Grand Union Flag (Continental Colours): Some historians (P. Ansoff, 2006) argue the flag on Prospect Hill was the plain British Union flag, not this design. No example of the Continental Colours survives; proportions vary in period depictions.
• Bennington Flag: The museum dates the surviving flag to about 1812-1830, and its machine-woven cotton points to the 19th century. No 1777 account mentions it.
• Gadsden Flag: No original survives and the snake was drawn differently by different makers; the snake here is our own drawing of the description. Period accounts spell the motto "Don't Tread on Me"; we use the familiar unpunctuated form.
• Culpeper Flag: The flag is known only from 19th-century accounts (Lossing's line drawing of the 1850s and a diary quoted in a county history). No original survives and its colours are unrecorded; the white field is the usual reconstruction.
• Appeal to Heaven (Pine Tree) Flag: No original survives; the tree is drawn differently in every reproduction, and ours is our own drawing.
• Moultrie Flag: Moultrie's description has no lettering. Whether the crescent is a moon or a gorget is debated.
• Liberty Flag: The word does not appear in Moultrie's own description, so this is the later tradition, offered alongside the plain crescent.
• Serapis Flag: Readings of the Dutch drawing differ: one count gives 12 eight-point stars and one seven-point star, and the drawing is nearly square. This file follows the usual reconstruction at 2:3.
• Guilford Courthouse Flag: There is no period record of the flag, and a National Park Service fabric analysis points to a later date. Some think it was cut down and once had 15 stars. The star layout follows the usual reconstruction.
• Brandywine Flag: Accounts differ on the unit (a Continental regiment or Pennsylvania militia) and on whether it flew earlier, at Cooch's Bridge. Its proportions here follow the usual reconstruction.
