Two eyes burn out of the darkness. The fallen angel sits with his chin on his fist and stares straight at you.

A fine art print of Lucifer by Franz von Stuck, gothic wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Franz von Stuck painted Lucifer in Munich in 1890. The light-bringer has fallen. He sits hunched in deep shadow, chin on his fist, his face lit only by those pale, glowing eyes.

Stuck was a leading Symbolist, a painter of moods and ideas rather than stories, and a founder of the Munich Secession. In 1891 Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria bought Lucifer straight from his studio. Ferdinand later told Stuck that his ministers crossed themselves when they first saw it. Look closely at the left edge, where a cold blue light glints in the dark. The original hangs in the National Gallery, Sofia.

THE LOOK
Smoky black, bruised blue and cold flesh tones with two points of light. Brooding, magnetic and quietly terrifying. Gothic wall art for a dark academia study, a home library or a gothic bedroom.

GIFTING
A bold gift for a birthday or a housewarming. A painting that made a royal court cross itself.

MORE
More fallen angels in our Dark Romanticism Art collection: Fallen Angel by Alexandre Cabanel. For another figure who rules the dark, see The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 200gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3 and A2, plus 12x16 and 18x24 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
