Gladiators after the Combat Print, Jose Moreno Carbonero 1882 Gladiator Painting, Roman Wall Art

The fight is over. In the shadow beneath the arena, one gladiator sinks onto the steps and looks up, while the other stands and gets his breath back.

A fine art print of Gladiators after the Combat by José Moreno Carbonero, Roman history wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
José Moreno Carbonero painted Gladiators after the Combat in 1882, in his first year as a scholarship student at the Spanish Academy in Rome. He was twenty-four. Instead of the fight, he paints what comes after. Two gladiators rest in a dim stone passage. One leans by a pillar. The other sits on the steps with a pale cloth around his shoulders.

Look closely at the pillar. The Latin inscription copies a real fight notice painted on a wall in Pompeii. It announces that the gladiator troupe of the aedile Aulus Suettius Certus will fight on 31 May, with a hunt and awnings to shade the crowd. Notice the laurel leaves on the ground, the sign of victory. The painting belongs to the Museo del Prado and hangs on long-term loan at the Museo de Málaga, in the city where Moreno Carbonero was born.

THE LOOK
Stone grey, warm skin tones and a flash of faded orange cloth in deep shadow. Quiet, weary and human. Roman wall art for a study, a home library or a hallway, and moody wall art with a story from ancient Rome.

GIFTING
A strong gift for a birthday, a graduation or a new home library. A painting about the moment after the battle.
