THE STORY BEHIND IT
Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant who left Venice in 1271 with his father and uncle, reached the court of Kublai Khan in China after about three years, and returned to Venice in 1295. Around 1298, held prisoner in Genoa, he reportedly told his stories to a fellow prisoner, the romance writer Rustichello da Pisa, who wrote them down. The result, The Travels of Marco Polo, was copied by hand across Europe for centuries. The swimming-pool game that borrowed his name came much, much later.
