You have seen these sayings on posters, mugs, and quote cards: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." "The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago; the second best time is now." Beautiful — and then what? A proverb read once is a decoration. A proverb lived with for a week is a teacher.
That is the idea behind The Workbook of Chinese Proverbs. It gathers fifty-three Chinese proverbs and idioms into eight parts — beginning and taking action, patience and perseverance, learning and self-knowledge, mind and peace, failure and adversity, character and relationships, work and simplicity, the journey and purpose — and turns each one into a complete workbook entry: the saying itself, what it means, the life wisdom Harish has drawn from it in his own essays, three concrete ways to put it into practice today, and reflection questions with ruled lines to write your answers on the page.
Where a reliable Chinese original exists, the entry goes deeper: the characters themselves, the pinyin so you can say the saying aloud, and a word-for-word literal translation — the bones under the English skin. Thirty-three of the fifty-three entries carry that full line. You will meet 千里之行,始于足下 (qiān lǐ zhī xíng, shǐ yú zú xià — "a journey of a thousand li begins beneath one's feet") and 不入虎穴,焉得虎子 — "if you do not enter the tiger's den, how can you obtain a tiger cub?"
The sayings are drawn from the proverbs Harish has returned to for over a decade, together with traditional proverbs and chengyu from the classical sources of China — the Analects, the Tao Te Ching, the Xunzi, the Zhuangzi, and the great storehouses of Chinese idiom. And the book is honest about where each saying comes from: where a proverb is drawn from a named classical text, the text is named with the entry; where a saying survives only as a popular attribution, it is printed as such — attributions checked, and marked honestly where a saying is traditional rather than documented.
Read it slowly: one entry a day, or one entry a week, returned to and lived with. The book closes with a Printable Workbook of ten reflection worksheets — a reflection sheet for every proverb, a one-proverb-a-week tracker, a 30-day wisdom challenge, and more — so the reading becomes a practice. The proverbs are old; the handwriting should be yours.
