On November 16, 1776, during the British attack on Fort Washington in Manhattan, Margaret Corbin's husband John was killed at his cannon, and she took over firing it until she was badly wounded. In July 1779 the Continental Congress granted her half a soldier's pay for life, making her the first woman to receive a military pension from Congress.
