Description

Soft as silk white, fawn, mahogany and pure black alpaca was blended with 5% nylon (for strength and elasticity) - then plied with soft black machine milled alpaca. Alpaca is super soft- I love it! - but lacks elasticity if spun alone.
I prefer a tiny bit of merino or silk or nylon to give it more flexibility and strength.
See coin photo - hand spun with love and attention. (I added a teensy bit of chartreuse fire star for some pop)

HERE IS WHAT I DO!:
Wool and alpaca must first be carded into soft clumps and fiber laying in the same direction before it can be used.
Many steps go into making a hand blended, handspun yarn!
First:
I hand blend thin layers of different fibers on my blending board (Huacaya alpaca, Tussah silk, shiny bamboo, fine merino) as I like blends best. Alpaca is wonderfully soft, but has little memory or bounce. Merino adds this in spades along with additional softness. The bamboo is antibacterial and breathes. I may also add a bit of Tencel (a viscose plant based fiber) as it’s soft as silk but much more affordable, and perhaps a bit of Starbright nylon or Snow Mountain nylon for a little sparkle. This takes times to lay up layer after layer.
Second:
The fiber is pulled off my blending board into a roving from which I can spin.
Third:
I hand spin the roving into yarn on my drop spindle. Without a spinning wheel (and doing it by hand vs a millspun!) it’s generally somewhat “thick and thin”, which I personally like. It’s a custom look and more organic than millspun.
Fourth:
I may decide to ply the yarn. This is an extra step and usually strengthens the yarn.
Fifth:
The yarn is washed and air dried.
