West African Barber Shop Sign.
Signs like these are found in many neighborhoods and towns in different African countries and also parts of the Carribbean, depicting hair styles of interests and trends, items that they sell or services they offer. This sign is of a hair style or cut with equipment or products that may have been available, to help maintain this look at home. Painted on a sheet of recycled plywood with bracing framework strips on the back. In colors of yellows, reds, oranges, wines and black, with the words 'Couffeur' in teal. The size is approx. 37" x 25" x 1". The painting does have signs of age and a feel of its naiveness, but a beautiful example of an African Folkart painting. From Ivory Coast West Africa, painted and signed by 'Paps'.
