Description

Welcome to Artisan Handwovens,

This is one of two plaid shawls woven in seven values of blue using the Fibonacci Sequence (the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, . . which I multiplied times three.) The colours range from royal blue to lightest powder blue. This shawl uses a medium and light colour for the weft.

* To begin the shawl, I weighed and blended the Cotswold (70%) with mohair (30%) fibers. I hand spun the fiber into yarn which allows the mohair to show a little like a boucle yarn. This was followed by dyeing and over-dyeing it several times into seven shades. Weaving involved organizing my colour choices into a pleasing sequence, then wrapping 9 warp threads for colour A, 24 for colour B, 15 for colour C, 9 for colour D, 6 for colour E, and then repeating them across the width of the shawl. But with each rotation, I moved the first colour to become the last. For the weft, I alternated my remaining two warp colours in the same number combinations. The different colours tied it all together. The ends are twisted into a corded fringe.

* The shawl is 25"W x 74"L. Its on-loom width was 27" by 86". Fulling in warm water has made this a warm, dense shawl, wrap, or throw. It is long enough to be thrown over your shoulder, or it can be secured with a decorative pin. It's perfect for chilly days/nights, or overly cold offices. It's also possible to wear it loosely around the neck as a scarf if its not too bulky. Cotswold and mohair both are shiny fibers. They are soft and warm, but with texture. It feels different than a super fine wool like merino. I wove it in plain weave to let the design and colours stand out.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Wash/rinse it gently by hand in warm water with a mild detergent. I like to rinse using a water softener with lavender which is a natural moth deterrent. Roll it in a towel, squeeze tightly or press out the water stand on it to , and lay it flat to dry, somewhere where your cat won't lay on it. Iron it on warm to give it a finished look. Do not machine wash. This could cause it to shrink or even felt. It is made to be worn and enjoyed; with care it should last a long time. If moths are common in your area, once thoroughly dry, I suggest storing it in a container with lavender or the moth repellent of your choice.
