Description

Description:
When you go for a walk with an artist, sometimes unexpected things happen. Dandelions turn into dog paws, faucets become feathers, and traffic cones transform into dragonfly wings.

Illustrated with photos and photo assemblages, artist Becka Rahn takes you on a walk around the neighborhood looking for art in everyday objects. The simple story encourages readers to look closely at the pictures because things aren't always what they seem.

The book was created to accompany a public art installation in a neighborhood in Minneapolis, MN. The original digital illustrations were made into vinyl wraps that covered three pairs of city utility boxes. The art on each pair of boxes included thumbnails of the original photos to encourage viewers to play an "I Spy" game by looking for the objects in the artwork on the boxes and also throughout the neighborhood. If you'd like to learn more about the project, visit my website at www.beckarahn.com.

About this book:
Every illustration in the book was created from photographs taken in the Prospect Park neighborhood in Minneapolis. I received a grant to work with the neighborhood association and the city to create vinyl wraps for 3 pairs of utility boxes, transforming those utility boxes into public art installations. This book was created to accompany that installation. It features the same illustrations that are on the public art pieces plus dozens of photos from the neighborhood. Every illustration is a scene of everyday objects from the neighborhood and is made from photos taken in the neighborhood. For example, the robin on the front cover was made from photos of a leaf, a manhole cover, the lens cap from my camera, a clothespin, a ruler, a rotary telephone dial and colored pencils.

You can play a game of "I Spy" on every page looking for the everyday objects that make up blue jays, a yellow lab, a cafe table, squirrels, bicycles, and sneakers. The text introduces basic art concepts (shape, line, color) and encourages the reader to explore the images and look for what might be pretending to be something else.

I am happy to autograph your copy upon request.

I design all of my fabrics and have them digitally printed. The patterns that I create are digital files. They start out as a photograph, illustration or a piece of handmade art. A giant ink jet printer then digitally prints my design onto many different fabrics. I work with a company called Spoonflower to do the printing, because they enable me to work with large professional quality printers that I couldn’t otherwise have access to.
