Mayflies are the predominant insect consumed by trout. Although much fun to see a trout hit the top of water, trout rarely due this due to exposing themselves. Nymphs, the stage of Mayflies developing underwater, is a much easier meal for which the trout eat MANY! Many fly fishers use nymphs, and can be bought as a gift set in different sizes and colors! When fishing nymphs, pay close attention to the leader or fishing line because it is difficult to feel the fish sucking in underwater Mayfly nymphs. Often times, a fish will take in a nymph fly, realize it is not real, and spit it back without the fisherman ever noticing! This can occurr numerous times. By the way, I have also caught bluegill and channel catfish with nymphs.
