Famous French literary writer Alexandre Dumas, author of "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers", was captivated by the beauty, mystery, and allure of "The Black Tulip", giving its namesake to one of his coveted historical romance novels. Taking place in the late 1600s, "The Black Tulip" tells a story about a city in the Netherlands where a generous prize is offered to the person who can grow a black tulip, sparking competition between the country's best gardeners to win the money, honor, and fame. The young and bourgeois Cornelius almost succeeds but is suddenly thrown into prison. There he meets the prison guard's beautiful daughter Rosa, who will be his rescuer...and romantic lover!

The novel was originally published in 1850 Paris as "La Tulipe Noir". Exactly one hundred years after The Black Tulip made its debut this stunning haute couture hat was created. Beautiful black tulips were carefully and artistically sculpted out of felt and arranged atop a perfectly rounded fascinator cap with a striking widow's peak. The black tulip felted flower delicately rest underneath a netted veil that can be pull over them or placed behind to reveal the wearer's face.

Capturing the romance and dark mysterious enchantment of The Black Tulip, this vintage original 1950s millinery fashion masterpiece would elegantly complement a gothic wedding gown, mourning dress, film noir femme fatale little black dress, or a "black widow" Halloween costume (not the superhero, but the sobbing widow with runny mascara and a bottle of poison in hand).

Making a thoughtful gift for your favorite dark lady Morticia Addams gardener, this 1950s Black Tulip gothic wedding veil millinery fashion fascinator epitomizes what is known as "Gothic Glamour".

In excellent vintage condition for its age, this 1950s black felted floral hat with netted veil is nearly pristine with view signs of wear...making it a marvelous gift! There appears to be no brand or sizing label present (please refer to the measurements listed below). The hat itself is in excellent shape; the felt may have a few places of faint surface wear but really nothing at all significant or noticeable.

The tulips may not be as perky as they once were, but without knowing how this hat may have looked decades ago the flowers truly look lovely in their current positioning. The interiors of the flowers include delightful strands of felt to create a realistic center for each flower...The tulips are truly gorgeous!

Please keep in mind that this hat is made of black felt so it does attract and show lint and you may wish to lightly brush it off carefully if it acquires some debris that needs removal. The veil has most of the damage. There is a rather large hole in the veil located in the upper right side portion of the hat; when the veil is pulled over the face, this hole is located where the veil covers the tulips in the right side corner. Fortunately, the veil can be positioned in a way wear this hole is not as noticeable, and since it covers an area of the black hat this helps to disguise it as well. There are a few other places of the veil that have some damage, but these are much smaller areas where only a few little sections of the veil are disconnected. Furthermore, the veil may have some bends or folds in it from storage over the years; for this reason, you may need to readjust the veil a little when wearing the hat.

21" interior circumference (best fits a small-medium sized lady's head)
