Description

This rug was hand-woven from a large abandoned "seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time" piece of pink and white denim reclaimed from a thrift shop (last photo).

It was hand woven on a floor loom, tightly packed with cotton/nylon warping thread in a "salt and pepper" warp of blue, pink, yellow and green that gives it a striped appearance. The rug is finished in end warp and then fringe, in the same warping thread, double-twisted and knotted for strength, durability, and to sooth chronic fringe straighteners like me. Both front and back are visible in the photos, some taken indoors, some outdoors.

The rug is reversible, completely washable, and should be laid flat to air dry.

READY TO SHIP: the rug in the photograph is the actual rug you receive when purchased.

Dimensions: 27" x 50" (1/3" thick)

Fiber content: 100% Cotton Denim

I began making handmade rag rugs as a way to use up leftover and unloved fabric. As I studied rug making, it became a way to learn and preserve an art developed by frontier women who made-do by repurposing clothes and curtains because they had no other materials available. I respect the artistry and talent of those rural women who lived a hard, duty-filled life and yet saw and created beauty every day. I aspire to their skill and values using the same patchwork style and traditional techniques.

Rag Rug Materials: the wool, denim and cotton used in my rugs is not shiny newly-purchased fabric. It is repurposed or rescued from the "unlovely" pile in fabric shops, unrequited stashes from estates, thrift shops, and auctions, and pieces purchased by crafters in enthusiasm and never finished.

About the Studio at Red Top Ranch: Red Top Ranch is the southwestern Nebraska home of a rural family, 3 rescued dogs (who are not allowed in the Studio) and one fiber artist. At the heart of the Studio is a love of nature, outdoors, the West and winter. Scarves, shawls and rag rugs are made using the traditional hand-crafted methods of our frontier grandmothers. Created by hand, one project at a time, combining natural materials with good design for beauty, durability, and individuality.
