Description

This pretty pottery box was made in the 1960's in China, then hand decorated in Macau. The white clay body was given an opaque white glaze after the first firing. After it dried, the piece was then hand painted and fired again to set the enamels. It was enameled with pink flowers, lots of green leaves, a blue rope design and a white on black meander edging the rim of the lid, to name some of the decorations. The lid has an oval knob painted a pale lavender pink. The decorations are not overtly Asian, but designed to appeal to Western tastes {that's us!}. The shape is an octagon, resembling a rectangle with clipped corners; this type of box is sometimes termed a casket or chest.

The bottom of the box was not glazed and was stamped in red ink with Chinese characters enclosed in a square. The writing reads: Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi which is "Great Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, Made". The Qianlong Period in the Qing Dynasty lasted from 1736 to 1795, but this box was made two centuries later. The mark was used to honor artists of the earlier period, a common practice on Chinese ceramics.

The box is 7 1/2 inches long, 5 1/2 inches from front to back and 3 1/4 inches deep inside. The height with the lid on is 6 inches to the top of the knob. It weighs a sturdy 2 pounds 6 ounces. The unglazed bottom has some discoloration and a small chip out of the clay {under the mark and slightly to the left in photograph #3}. There are some dots of enamel that were dripped onto the interior bottom, but otherwise the box is in excellent condition. It's ready to store small items or just look lovely for you.

This is just one of the sweetest, most charming pieces of antique folk art I've seen in a long time - it honestly just touches my heart. I love it so much and am thrilled I didn't "resist" temptation! Beautiful!

First, my purchase review: This is a gorgeous, colorful copper enamel bowl, in excellent vintage condition and exactly as described. Shipping was super fast, and my lovely bowl was carefully and safely packaged.

Next, my review of the sellers, PrimpingYourHome: Linda and Wayne are incredibly nice, helpful people! When I was having trouble with my Etsy account, they contacted Etsy to try and find a solution, and spent a lot of time sending me supportive emails, until I finally found the right fix.

With all the negativity in the world today, a chance encounter with strangers as wonderful as this couple is beyond heartwarming. Obviously, PrimpingYourHome has my absolute highest recommendation!! 👍💜💜💜💜💜
