Description

Hemp has been traditionally used for food and body care for years, and though largely pushed aside, it's value has not been forgotten and is now making a strong comeback. The oil for hemp seed oil is produced from the seeds of the Cannabis plant, but it does not contain THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Even when grown conventionally, hemp farming usually does not have the need for the use of pesticides and herbicides. Grown in such an eco-friendly manner, hemp oil is the true meaning of a natural product.

Aside from choosing our products with the environment in mind, the increasing popularity of hemp oil in personal care is largely due to its high EFA or Essential Fatty Acid content. Hemp oil is a good source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are called essential fats because they are needed to maintain healthy cells, nerves and brain function. These fatty acids have to be absorbed from food since the body does not produce them. A deficiency in these fatty acids can cause skin problems involving dry, rashy, itchy, red skin as well as facial break-outs. Containing anti-inflammatory properties and rich in antioxidants, vitamin E and vitamin A, hemp oil hydrates and nourishes the skin so acts as a wonderful moisturizing, healing choice for an oil.

The use of harsh cleansers, diet and the effects of aging all take their toll. Our hands especially take a beating and since they are a first impression upon greeting people, we certainly don't want them to be red and dry. Lotions and creams are the result of the combination of the emollient benefits of oil with the hydrating effects of water. For this lotion we start with unrefined hemp seed oil and combine it with cocoa butter, aloe vera, water, lecithin and glycerin.
Glycerin is added as a humectant which is useful for maintaining moisture in dry skin.
Aloe vera is not only soothing but has many skin reparative benefits.
Cocoa butter is one of the ultimate moisturizers and helps to seal in all the benefits from the ingredient list.
Lecithin helps to hydrate skin but also acts as an emulsifier to help hold the oil and water contents together.

Emulsifying wax comes from naturally occurring esters and fatty acids from the Palm Kernel plant and is processed into a pastille flake form. Palm Kernel oil (Elaeis guineensis) is derived from the fruit's seed. I use emulsifying wax for the body lotions rather than beeswax (which is used for the facial creams) because due to the higher water content in the lotions, the emulsifying wax seems to work better to prevent the oil/water content from separating.

Patchouli is one of those scents you either love or would rather avoid. The power of association is strong with this essential oil. As fondly as my husband reflects on his youth, his main recollection of patchouli is from people trying to cover up the need for a shower at musical concerts. Though he does have to admit it made a good bug repellent. Then there is a female friend who calls it her own personal fragrance and feels young and alive with this earthy scent to take her back to good times in her life. To each his own with this lingering, earthy scent, but anyone can love patchouli.

Patchouli is part of the Mint Family and produces a light purple flower similar in look to the lavender flower. Although the smell of Patchouli is very different than that of the flowery scent of lavender, it has been used for centuries in perfumes.
Patchouli has a powerful action on our psyche and brings a sense of sacredness of life. Its earthy smell can stimulate and strengthen the nervous system and act almost like a sedative for anxiety. Reaching deep into our emotions, this oil dispels sexual tensions and has become known as an aphrodisiac.

Containing a healing agent, patchoulene, patchouli is also recommended for healing inflamed skin conditions and wound care. Its skin rejuvenating properties help mature skin maintain its suppleness, therefore is often seen in moisturizing creams.

Useful as a hand or a full body lotion you won't find yourself needing to reapply it as often as you may be doing now. Being a richer, higher oil:water ratio than you may be used to, you don't need a lot at a time. Using too much at a time results in it taking longer to absorb and you may interpret that as it being greasy.

NOTE ON PRESERVATION:
Items are made in small batches as they are needed. The concept behind this shop is for the consumer seeking all natural products with the understanding that the items are not intended to sit around and natural preservatives are used.
Natural preservatives normally used in the creams are antimicrobial grapefruit seed extract, antioxidant Vit. E and the concentration of essential oils. What this means is that while these natural preservatives deter the growth of bacteria and molds, they are not broad spectrum and only offer a limited shelf life. Being the risk of contamination and loss of potency over time is present in any perishable product, please try to use the item within 3 to 4 months. Products which contain water such as the creams and lotions are the most at risk for contamination. The salves, containing no water, are very stable as is and are fine for months. Keep any of the products in a cool location, and out of exposure to heat and sunlight. Refrigeration will extend the shelf life of perishable items.

The body lotions contain a higher water content than our facial creams, therefore being a higher risk for mold and bacteria growth outside of refrigeration I do use a synthetic preservative in the body lotions. I use a broad-sprectrum product called Optiphen, a paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative. Optiphen is a globally approved preservative system created by ISP consisting of Phenoxyethanol and Caprylyl Glycol. So though it is a synthetic preservative, it is a good choice for those who want to avoid parabens as much as possible.
Please let me know if you prefer it not be used upon ordering.

Body lotions come in an 8 oz plastic bottle or if you don't want it in a bottle you can choose it come in a plastic jar. You choose the type of top at check-out, either a pump or a pop-up cap. If you have a preference of the bottle please let me know. Pictured above are the white or natural #2 HDPE or clear #1 PET plastic, all easily recyclable.
The clear PET plastic bottle is the boston style bottle so even though it looks smaller than the taller #2 HDPE bottles, both types hold 8 oz.

Shipping policies

Packages are carefully wrapped to ensure it reaches its destination safely.
If the package weighs 13 oz. or less it will ship by USPS First Class Mail. If it is something perishable such as creams or body butters during the heat of the summer I'll send it Priority Mail. If the package is over 13 oz. it will automatically need to be sent Priority Mail.
Packages that ship Priority Mail are automatically insured up to a value of $50.

I live on the east coast, therefore depending on to what zone the package is to be sent will determine the actual shipping costs. Shipping costs for Priority Mail varies greatly as a package travels further across the country. Should the package need not travel as far the actual shipping will of course be less, therefore the buyer will receive a refund on the shipping costs charged at the time of purchase.

For buyers with multiple items, if they end up overpaying on the totaled shipping costs compared to the actual shipping costs, I will reimburse minus the packaging costs.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:

Should a buyer choose the Other option as payment please be aware that I cannot accept personal checks. There may be problems with a check drawn on a non-US bank in a foreign currency. In fact, I'm not sure our banks will accept the payment. Payment needs to be as an International Postal Money Order in USD.

Contents of the order are itemized on the custom forms which is the requirement of the seller. Customs duties are the responsibility of the buyer. Each country has different limits and it is up to the buyer to educate himself/herself on that particular country's fees. Custom fees are often based on the dollar value. Businesses are not allowed to mark an order as a gift, it is marked as merchandise.
Below is a helpful resource for finding out how much you may have to pay in fees:
http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/
Due to restrictions on Bath and Beauty products we do not ship to Mexico

Please be patient with the shipping times for international orders. The minimum shipping time is about two weeks, but depending on location it could be a month or longer till the package arrives at the buyers address.
